Ezras reaktion på de blandede ægteskaber
1Kort tid efter kom Judas ledere til mig og fortalte, at folket og endda nogle af præsterne og levitterne ikke havde holdt sig adskilt fra de kana’anæere, hittitter, perizzitter, jebusitter, ammonitter, moabitter, egyptere og amoritter, som boede i landet, og at de havde antaget nogle af deres afskyelige skikke. 2Judæiske mænd havde indgået ægteskab med kvinder fra disse gudløse folkeslag, og de havde tilladt deres sønner at gifte sig med piger fra disse folk. Derved var Guds hellige folk blevet urent, og lederne havde oven i købet været de første til at være utro mod Herren.
3Da jeg hørte det, flængede jeg i fortvivlelse mit tøj, rev mig i håret og skægget og satte mig ned, stum af sorg og smerte. 4De, som havde dyb respekt for Israels Guds befalinger til sit folk, og som frygtede Guds straf på grund af den synd, som var begået, kom og sad hos mig. Sådan sad vi overvældet af sorg, indtil det var tid at bringe aftenofferet. 5Så rejste jeg mig i mit flængede tøj, og skamfuld vendte jeg mig til Herren. Jeg faldt på knæ, løftede hænderne til Herren, min Gud, 6og råbte: „Åh min Gud, jeg skammer mig over at løfte mit ansigt til dig, for vi står i synd til halsen, vores synd er himmelråbende. 7Vores folks historie er fra ende til anden en sørgelig beretning om synd og frafald, og derfor blev vi og vores konger og præster konstant overfaldet, plyndret, sendt i eksil og hånet af ugudelige konger lige til i dag. 8Men nu har vi oplevet din nåde, idet du har ladet den lille rest, der er tilbage af os, undslippe slaveriet og endnu engang bosætte os i det hellige land. Du har tændt håbets lys i vores øjne og givet os nyt mod efter vores slavetilværelse. 9Selvom vi var slaver, svigtede du os ikke, men gjorde de persiske konger venligt stemt over for os. Du gav os kræfter til at genopbygge templet og opnå din beskyttelse i Jerusalem og Judas land.
10Men hvad skal vi nu gøre, Herre? Endnu en gang har vi vendt os bort fra dig og har overtrådt dine befalinger. 11Profeterne advarede os på forhånd om, at det land, vi skulle tage i besiddelse, var forurenet af den tidligere befolknings afskyelige skikke og fuldt af ugudelighed fra ende til anden. 12Du advarede os imod at lade vores børn indgå ægteskab med deres børn, og imod at lade os besnære af deres form for velstand. Du lovede, at hvis vi adlød dig, ville vi blive en stærk nation, og vi og vores efterkommere ville for altid få lov at blive boende i landet og nyde dets goder. 13Du har straffet os for vores ulydighed, dog ikke så hårdt som vi fortjente, for du har i din nåde ladet en rest af os overleve og vende hjem. 14Men nu har vi igen overtrådt dine befalinger ved at gifte os med folk, som praktiserer afskyelige ting. Vil du nu i din vrede tilintetgøre os fuldstændigt, så der ikke bliver nogen rest tilbage? 15Åh Herre, Israels Gud, du er en god og retfærdig Gud. Vi står her i dag for dit ansigt som en rest, der har overlevet. Men vi står med en stor synd og kan ikke forvente andet end din straf.”
1Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. 2For they have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons: so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of those lands: yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this trespass. 3And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonied. 4Then were assembled unto me every one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the transgression of those that had been carried away; and I sat astonied until the evening sacrifice.
5¶ And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God,9.5 heaviness: or, affliction 6And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens.9.6 trespass: or, guiltiness 7Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great trespass unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day. 8And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.9.8 space: Heb. moment9.8 a nail: or, a pin: that is, a constant and sure abode 9For we were bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.9.9 to repair: Heb. to set up 10And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments, 11Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land with the filthiness of the people of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness.9.11 by: Heb. by the hand of9.11 from…: Heb. from mouth to mouth 12Now therefore give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth for ever: that ye may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children for ever. 13And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such deliverance as this;9.13 hast punished…: Heb. hast withheld beneath our iniquities 14Should we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? wouldest not thou be angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no remnant nor escaping? 15O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.
