Balaam bénit Israël
1Alors Balaam dit à Balaq : Construis-moi ici sept autels et prépare-moi sept taureaux et sept béliers.
2Balaq fit ce que Balaam lui avait demandé et, ensemble, ils offrirent un taureau et un bélier sur chaque autel. 3Balaam dit à Balaq : Reste ici près de ton holocauste pendant que je me rendrai à l’écart. Peut-être l’Eternel viendra-t-il à ma rencontre. Alors je te communiquerai ce qu’il me révélera.
Et il s’en alla sur une crête23.3 Autre traduction : en un endroit dégagé, sur une colline dénudée.. 4Dieu se manifesta à Balaam qui lui dit : J’ai fait dresser sept autels et j’ai offert un taureau et un bélier sur chacun d’eux.
5Alors l’Eternel mit sa parole dans la bouche de Balaam, puis il ajouta : Retourne auprès de Balaq et transmets-lui ce message.
6Balaam retourna vers Balaq et le trouva debout avec tous les chefs de Moab près de son holocauste. 7Alors il déclama cet oracle :
D’Aram23.7 Nom complet : Aram-Naharaïm (Syrie des deux fleuves), c’est-à-dire la Mésopotamie., Balaq m’a fait venir,
oui, le roi de Moab ╵m’a fait venir ╵des monts de l’Est.
Allons ! Maudis Jacob pour moi !
Viens et profère des menaces ╵contre Israël !
8Mais comment maudirais-je ? ╵Dieu ne l’a pas maudit.
Comment menacerais-je ╵celui que l’Eternel ╵ne veut pas menacer ?
9Voici : je le contemple ╵du sommet des rochers,
et, du haut des collines, ╵je le regarde.
Je le vois : c’est un peuple ╵qui demeure à l’écart,
il ne se considère pas ╵semblable aux autres peuples.
10Qui a jamais compté ╵les foules de Jacob, ╵qui sont aussi nombreuses ╵que les grains de poussière,
ou qui a dénombré ╵le quart du peuple d’Israël ?
Qu’il me soit accordé ╵la même mort ╵que celle de ces justes,
et que mon avenir ╵soit identique au leur !
11Balaq dit à Balaam : Que m’as-tu fait ? Je t’ai fait venir pour maudire mes ennemis, et voilà que tu les combles de bénédictions !
12Balaam répondit : Puis-je prononcer autre chose que les paroles que l’Eternel met dans ma bouche ?
Balaam bénit Israël une deuxième fois
13Balaq reprit : Viens donc avec moi à un autre endroit d’où tu pourras voir ce peuple, tu n’en apercevras qu’une partie et tu ne pourras pas le voir tout entier. Et maudis-le pour moi de cet endroit.
14Et Balaq le conduisit au champ des Guetteurs23.14 Un poste élevé sur la chaîne des Abarim d’où l’on surveillait l’approche des ennemis. au sommet du Pisga. Là aussi, il construisit sept autels et offrit un taureau et un bélier sur chacun d’eux. 15Balaam dit à Balaq : Tiens-toi debout près de ton holocauste, tandis que j’irai là-bas à sa rencontre.
16L’Eternel se manifesta à Balaam et lui mit des paroles dans la bouche, puis il ajouta : Retourne auprès de Balaq et tu lui parleras comme je viens de te le dire.
17Balaam revint vers Balaq et le trouva toujours debout près de son holocauste, les princes de Moab à ses côtés.
– Qu’a dit l’Eternel ? lui demanda Balaq.
18Alors Balaam prononça son oracle :
Allons, Balaq, écoute !
Fils de Tsippor, ╵prête-moi attention,
19Dieu n’est pas homme pour mentir,
ni humain pour se repentir.
A-t-il jamais parlé ╵sans qu’il tienne parole ?
Et n’accomplit-il pas ╵ce qu’il a déclaré ?
20Oui, j’ai reçu la charge ╵de prononcer ╵une bénédiction.
Il a béni : ╵je n’y changerai rien.
21Il n’a pas constaté ╵de péché chez Jacob,
et il ne trouve pas ╵de mal en Israël23.21 Autre traduction : on ne constate aucune faute…, on ne trouve aucun mal… D’autres comprennent : on ne voit aucun malheur en Jacob, on ne trouve aucune misère en Israël..
Oui, l’Eternel son Dieu ╵est avec lui.
Dans ses rangs retentit ╵l’acclamation royale.
22Dieu les a fait sortir d’Egypte :
sa puissance est semblable ╵à la force du buffle,
23et la divination ╵est absente en Jacob :
on ne consulte pas ╵d’augure en Israël,
il est dit à Jacob ╵au moment opportun,
oui, il est dit à Israël ╵ce que Dieu accomplit23.23 Autre traduction : on ne peut recourir à la magie contre Jacob, à la divination contre Israël ; on ne peut que proclamer ce que Dieu accomplit pour eux..
24Voici, comme un lion, ╵un peuple qui se lève,
il bondit comme un lion,
il ne se couche pas ╵sans avoir dévoré sa proie,
sans avoir bu le sang ╵de ses victimes.
25Balaq dit à Balaam : Si tu ne peux pas le maudire, au moins ne le bénis pas !
26Mais Balaam répondit à Balaq : Ne t’ai-je pas prévenu que je ferai tout ce que l’Eternel m’ordonnera ?
Troisième bénédiction d’Israël
27Balaq dit à Balaam : Viens, je vais t’emmener à un autre endroit. Peut-être que de là, l’Eternel trouvera bon que tu les maudisses pour moi.
28Et Balaq emmena Balaam au sommet du mont Peor d’où l’on a vue sur tout le désert. 29Balaam dit de nouveau à Balaq de lui bâtir sept autels et de lui préparer sept taureaux et sept béliers. 30Balaq fit ce que Balaam lui avait demandé et il offrit un taureau et un bélier sur chaque autel.
Balaam’s First Message
1Balaam said, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me.” 2Balak did as Balaam said, and the two of them offered a bull and a ram on each altar.
3Then Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your offering while I go aside. Perhaps the Lord will come to meet with me. Whatever he reveals to me I will tell you.” Then he went off to a barren height.
4God met with him, and Balaam said, “I have prepared seven altars, and on each altar I have offered a bull and a ram.”
5The Lord put a word in Balaam’s mouth and said, “Go back to Balak and give him this word.”
6So he went back to him and found him standing beside his offering, with all the Moabite officials. 7Then Balaam spoke his message:
“Balak brought me from Aram,
the king of Moab from the eastern mountains.
‘Come,’ he said, ‘curse Jacob for me;
come, denounce Israel.’
8How can I curse
those whom God has not cursed?
How can I denounce
those whom the Lord has not denounced?
9From the rocky peaks I see them,
from the heights I view them.
I see a people who live apart
and do not consider themselves one of the nations.
10Who can count the dust of Jacob
or number even a fourth of Israel?
Let me die the death of the righteous,
and may my final end be like theirs!”
11Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I brought you to curse my enemies, but you have done nothing but bless them!”
12He answered, “Must I not speak what the Lord puts in my mouth?”
Balaam’s Second Message
13Then Balak said to him, “Come with me to another place where you can see them; you will not see them all but only the outskirts of their camp. And from there, curse them for me.” 14So he took him to the field of Zophim on the top of Pisgah, and there he built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.
15Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your offering while I meet with him over there.”
16The Lord met with Balaam and put a word in his mouth and said, “Go back to Balak and give him this word.”
17So he went to him and found him standing beside his offering, with the Moabite officials. Balak asked him, “What did the Lord say?”
18Then he spoke his message:
“Arise, Balak, and listen;
hear me, son of Zippor.
19God is not human, that he should lie,
not a human being, that he should change his mind.
Does he speak and then not act?
Does he promise and not fulfill?
20I have received a command to bless;
he has blessed, and I cannot change it.
21“No misfortune is seen in Jacob,
no misery observed23:21 Or He has not looked on Jacob’s offenses / or on the wrongs found in Israel.
The Lord their God is with them;
the shout of the King is among them.
22God brought them out of Egypt;
they have the strength of a wild ox.
23There is no divination against23:23 Or in Jacob,
no evil omens against23:23 Or in Israel.
It will now be said of Jacob
and of Israel, ‘See what God has done!’
24The people rise like a lioness;
they rouse themselves like a lion
that does not rest till it devours its prey
and drinks the blood of its victims.”
25Then Balak said to Balaam, “Neither curse them at all nor bless them at all!”
26Balaam answered, “Did I not tell you I must do whatever the Lord says?”
Balaam’s Third Message
27Then Balak said to Balaam, “Come, let me take you to another place. Perhaps it will please God to let you curse them for me from there.” 28And Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, overlooking the wasteland.
29Balaam said, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me.” 30Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.
