Tentatives d’intimidation
1Lorsque Sanballat, Tobiya, Guéshem l’Arabe et le reste de nos ennemis apprirent que j’avais fini de rebâtir la muraille et qu’il n’y restait plus de brèche – sauf les portes dont je n’avais pas encore posé les battants à cette époque – 2Sanballat et Guéshem m’envoyèrent un message pour me dire : Viens et ayons ensemble une entrevue à Kefirim, dans la vallée d’Ono6.2 Kefirim: localité inconnue, dans la plaine de Saron, au nord de Lydda, dans la partie la plus à l’ouest de la région occupée par les rapatriés (Né 7.37 ; 11.35)..
Ils avaient l’intention de me faire du mal.
3Je leur envoyai des messagers pour leur répondre : J’ai un grand travail à exécuter et il m’est impossible de me rendre auprès de vous. Je n’ai pas de raison d’interrompre l’ouvrage en l’abandonnant pour aller vous rencontrer.
4A quatre reprises, ils me firent transmettre la même proposition, et je leur retournai la même réponse. 5Une cinquième fois, Sanballat m’envoya ce même message par son serviteur qui tenait à la main une lettre ouverte. 6Il y était écrit :
« Le bruit se répand parmi les peuples des régions environnantes que toi et les Juifs, vous projetez une révolte. Guéshem me l’a d’ailleurs confirmé. Ce serait pour cela que tu reconstruis la muraille. On dit même que tu veux devenir leur roi 7et que tu as déjà désigné des prophètes chargés de proclamer à Jérusalem que tu es devenu roi de Juda. Maintenant, des rumeurs de ce genre arriveront certainement aux oreilles de l’empereur. Viens donc en discuter avec nous ! »
8Je lui fis répondre : Rien de ce que tu affirmes n’est exact. Tout ceci est une pure invention de ta part !
9Tous ces gens, en effet, ne cherchaient qu’à nous faire peur ; ils espéraient que nous nous découragerions et que nous abandonnerions l’ouvrage !
Maintenant, ô Dieu, fortifie-moi pour ma tâche6.9 Les mots : ô Dieu ne sont pas dans l’hébreu. Mais il semble bien s’agir d’une courte prière. Les anciennes versions ont : Maintenant, je fortifierai mes mains. !
L’intervention d’un faux prophète
10Je me rendis chez Shemaya, fils de Delaya et petit-fils de Mehétabéel, qui s’était barricadé chez lui. Il s’écria : Allons tenir conseil dans le temple de Dieu, au fond du sanctuaire, et verrouillons-en les portes, car ils veulent te tuer : ils vont venir pendant la nuit pour t’assassiner.
11Mais je lui répondis : Comment un homme dans ma position prendrait-il la fuite ? D’ailleurs, quel homme comme moi pourrait pénétrer dans le Temple sans perdre la vie6.11 Nb 18.7 interdit à ceux qui n’étaient pas prêtres de pénétrer à l’intérieur du tabernacle et du Temple (voir 2 Ch 26.16-21). ? Non, je n’irai pas !
12J’avais bien compris que ce n’était pas Dieu qui l’envoyait. Mais il avait prononcé cette prophétie pour moi parce que Sanballat et Tobiya l’avaient soudoyé. 13Ils avaient agi ainsi pour me faire peur, et pour qu’en suivant son conseil, je commette un péché. Alors ils auraient pu me faire une mauvaise réputation et me discréditer.
14Mon Dieu, ne laisse pas Sanballat et Tobiya impunis pour leurs actes, ni Noadia la prophétesse, ni les autres prophètes qui ont cherché à me faire peur.
La confusion des ennemis
15La muraille fut achevée en cinquante-deux jours, le vingt-cinq du mois d’Eloul6.15 Le 3 octobre 445 av. J.-C. (ou fin septembre selon certains). L’assemblée solennelle du peuple fut tenue cinq jours plus tard (8.1-2). La dédicace de la muraille est décrite en 12.27-47.. 16Lorsque tous nos ennemis l’apprirent, tous les peuples étrangers qui nous entouraient furent saisis de crainte et profondément humiliés à leurs propres yeux, car ils reconnurent qu’un tel ouvrage n’avait pu être mené à bonne fin qu’avec l’aide de notre Dieu.
17Durant toute cette période, des notables de Juda entretenaient une abondante correspondance avec Tobiya. 18En effet, beaucoup de Judéens étaient liés à lui par serment parce qu’il était le gendre de Shekania, fils d’Arah, et que son propre fils Yohanân avait épousé la fille de Meshoullam, fils de Bérékia. 19Ils avaient même l’audace de vanter ses mérites en ma présence, et ils lui rapportaient mes paroles. C’était ce Tobiya qui envoyait des lettres pour m’intimider.
Further opposition to the rebuilding
1When word came to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab and the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left in it – though up to that time I had not set the doors in the gates – 2Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: ‘Come, let us meet together in one of the villages6:2 Or in Kephirim on the plain of Ono.’
But they were scheming to harm me; 3so I sent messengers to them with this reply: ‘I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?’ 4Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer.
5Then, the fifth time, Sanballat sent his assistant to me with the same message, and in his hand was an unsealed letter 6in which was written:
‘It is reported among the nations – and Geshem6:6 Hebrew Gashmu, a variant of Geshem says it is true – that you and the Jews are plotting to revolt, and therefore you are building the wall. Moreover, according to these reports you are about to become their king 7and have even appointed prophets to make this proclamation about you in Jerusalem: “There is a king in Judah!” Now this report will get back to the king; so come, let us meet together.’
8I sent him this reply: ‘Nothing like what you are saying is happening; you are just making it up out of your head.’
9They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, ‘Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed.’
But I prayed, ‘Now strengthen my hands.’
10One day I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home. He said, ‘Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple, and let us close the temple doors, because men are coming to kill you – by night they are coming to kill you.’
11But I said, ‘Should a man like me run away? Or should someone like me go into the temple to save his life? I will not go!’ 12I realised that God had not sent him, but that he had prophesied against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. 13He had been hired to intimidate me so that I would commit a sin by doing this, and then they would give me a bad name to discredit me.
14Remember Tobiah and Sanballat, my God, because of what they have done; remember also the prophet Noadiah and how she and the rest of the prophets have been trying to intimidate me. 15So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days.
Opposition to the completed wall
16When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realised that this work had been done with the help of our God.
17Also, in those days the nobles of Judah were sending many letters to Tobiah, and replies from Tobiah kept coming to them. 18For many in Judah were under oath to him, since he was son-in-law to Shekaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berekiah. 19Moreover, they kept reporting to me his good deeds and then telling him what I said. And Tobiah sent letters to intimidate me.
