L’organisation des travaux
1Eliashib, le grand-prêtre, se mit au travail avec ses collègues, les prêtres, et ils se chargèrent de la reconstruction de la porte des Brebis. Ils la consacrèrent et en posèrent les battants, puis ils continuèrent à réparer la muraille, qu’ils consacrèrent, jusqu’à la tour de Méa, puis jusqu’à la tour de Hananéel.
2A côté d’eux travaillaient les habitants de Jéricho. A leur suite, c’était Zakkour, fils d’Imri, qui bâtissait. 3Les descendants de Senaa reconstruisirent la porte des Poissons3.3 Vers le nord-ouest.. Ils en firent la charpente et en posèrent les battants, les verrous et les barres. 4A côté d’eux, Merémoth, fils d’Urie, petit-fils d’Haqqots, travaillait ; à sa suite, c’était Meshoullam, fils de Bérékia, fils de Meshézabéel ; et plus loin, Tsadoq, fils de Baana. 5Venaient ensuite les habitants de Teqoa, mais leurs notables refusèrent de travailler sous les ordres des maîtres d’œuvre. 6Yoyada, fils de Paséah, et Meshoullam, fils de Besodia, réparèrent la Vieille Porte. Ils en firent la charpente et posèrent les battants, les verrous et les barres.
7A côté d’eux travaillaient Melatia, le Gabaonite, Yadôn, le Méronothite, et les gens de Gabaon et de Mitspa qui relevaient de la juridiction du gouverneur de la province à l’ouest de l’Euphrate. 8A côté d’eux travaillait l’orfèvre Ouzziel, fils de Harhaya, et à côté de lui, Hanania le parfumeur. Ils restaurèrent Jérusalem jusqu’à l’endroit où la muraille s’élargit. 9A côté d’eux travaillait Rephaya, fils de Hour, chef de la moitié du district de Jérusalem. 10A côté d’eux, Yedaya, fils de Haroumaph, travaillait à la section située en face de sa maison. A sa suite venait Hattoush, fils de Hashabnia. 11Un second secteur de la muraille ainsi que la tour des Fours furent réparés par Malkiya, fils de Harim, et par Hashoub, fils de Pahath-Moab.
12A côté d’eux travaillait Shalloum, fils de Hallohesh, chef de l’autre moitié du district de Jérusalem, assisté de ses filles. 13Hanoun et les habitants de Zanoah3.13 Située à une trentaine de kilomètres au sud-est de Jérusalem. réparèrent la porte de la Vallée. Ils la reconstruisirent et en posèrent les battants, les verrous et les barres. De plus, ils restaurèrent la muraille sur cinq cents mètres jusqu’à la porte du Fumier. 14C’est Malkiya, fils de Rékab, chef du district de Beth-Hakkérem, qui répara la porte du Fumier. Il la rebâtit et en posa les battants, les verrous et les barres. 15Shalloun, fils de Kol-Hozé, chef du district de Mitspa, répara la porte de la Source3.15 Voir 2.14 et note.. Après l’avoir reconstruite, il la couvrit d’un toit et fixa les battants, les verrous et les barres. De plus, il releva la muraille de l’Etang de l’aqueduc, près du jardin du roi, jusqu’aux marches qui descendent de la Cité de David.
16Au-delà, Néhémie, fils d’Azbouq, chef de la moitié du district de Beth-Tsour3.16 A quelques kilomètres au nord d’Hébron., travaillait dans le secteur qui s’étendait jusqu’en face du cimetière de David et allait jusqu’au réservoir artificiel et jusqu’à la caserne3.16 L’ancienne caserne des gardes du corps de David (2 S 23.8-39).. 17Au-delà travaillaient des lévites : Rehoum, fils de Bani, puis, à côté de lui, Hashabia, chef de la moitié du district de Qeïla. 18Au-delà travaillait leur collègue Bavvaï, fils de Hénadad, chef de l’autre moitié du district de Qeïla, 19et, à sa suite, Ezer, fils de Josué, chef de Mitspa, réparait un second secteur, situé en face de la montée de l’arsenal, à l’endroit où la muraille fait saillie.
20Au-delà, Baruch, fils de Zabbaï, réparait avec ardeur une autre section depuis l’angle jusqu’à l’entrée de la maison d’Eliashib, le grand-prêtre. 21Au-delà, Merémoth, fils d’Urie et petit-fils d’Haqqots, réparait un autre secteur, depuis l’entrée de la maison d’Eliashib jusqu’à son extrémité. 22Au-delà travaillaient les prêtres qui habitaient les plaines environnantes. 23Au-delà, Benjamin et Hashoub réparaient la muraille en face de leurs maisons. A côté d’eux, Azaria, fils de Maaséya et petit-fils d’Anania, travaillait à côté de sa maison. 24Au-delà, Binnouï, fils de Hénadad, renforçait un autre secteur allant de la maison d’Azaria jusqu’à l’angle en saillie de la muraille.
25Puis c’était Palal, fils d’Ouzaï, qui travaillait devant la saillie et la tour supérieure qui domine le palais royal et touche à la cour de la prison, et au-delà, Pedaya, fils de Pareosh. 26Les desservants du Temple s’étaient établis sur la colline de l’Ophel3.26 Colline de Jérusalem (voir 11.21 ; 2 Ch 27.3). Le nom s’appliquait surtout au côté nord de la colline qui se trouvait au sud-est de la ville, celle qui constituait autrefois la Cité de David, au sud du Temple. jusqu’en face de la porte des Eaux à l’est, et de la tour en saillie. 27Les gens de Teqoa travaillaient à la section suivante, depuis la grande tour en saillie jusqu’à la muraille de la colline de l’Ophel. 28A partir de la porte des Chevaux, les prêtres travaillaient chacun en face de sa maison. 29Au-delà, Tsadoq, fils d’Immer, réparait devant sa maison et ensuite Shemaya, fils de Shekania, gardien de la porte de l’Orient3.29 Peut-être l’actuelle porte Dorée., 30Hanania, fils de Shélémia, et Hanoun, le sixième fils de Tsalaph, réparèrent le secteur suivant, et au-delà, Meshoullam, fils de Bérékia, travaillait en face de sa demeure.
31Puis Malkiya, de la corporation des orfèvres, travaillait jusqu’aux maisons des desservants du Temple et des marchands, vis-à-vis de la porte de la Surveillance et jusqu’au poste de guet situé en haut de l’angle de la muraille. 32Les orfèvres et les marchands réparèrent la muraille entre ce poste de l’angle et la porte des Brebis.
Le mépris de Sanballat et Tobiya
33Lorsque Sanballat apprit que nous rebâtissions la muraille, il fut très mécontent et se mit violemment en colère. Il se moqua des Juifs 34en disant devant ses compatriotes et devant l’armée de Samarie : Qu’est-ce que ces minables Juifs veulent donc faire ? S’imagineraient-ils qu’on va les laisser agir et qu’en offrant des sacrifices à leur Dieu ils viendront maintenant à bout d’une telle entreprise ? Redonneront-ils vie à des pierres ensevelies sous des monceaux de poussière et calcinées ?
35Tobiya, l’Ammonite, qui se tenait à ses côtés ajouta : Ils n’ont qu’à bâtir ! Si un renard s’élance contre leur muraille de pierre, il la brisera.
36Ecoute, ô notre Dieu, comme on nous méprise ! Fais retomber sur eux l’humiliation qu’ils nous infligent et livre-les au pillage sur une terre d’exil. 37Ne pardonne pas leur faute et n’efface pas leur péché, car ils ont offensé ceux qui rebâtissent les remparts.
38Cependant, nous avons continué à bâtir la muraille et, sur tout le pourtour, elle fut réparée jusqu’à mi-hauteur, car chacun avait pris ce travail à cœur.
A List of the People Who Repaired the Wall
1Eliashib the high priest and the other priests went to work. They rebuilt the Sheep Gate. They set it apart to God. They put its doors in place. They continued to rebuild the wall up to the Tower of the Hundred. They set the tower apart to God. Then they continued to rebuild the wall all the way to the Tower of Hananel. 2Some men from Jericho rebuilt the next part of the wall. And Zakkur rebuilt the next part. He was the son of Imri.
3The sons of Hassenaah rebuilt the Fish Gate. They laid its beams. They put in place its doors with their metal bolts and bars. 4Meremoth repaired the next part of the wall. He was the son of Uriah. Uriah was the son of Hakkoz. Next to Meremoth, Meshullam made some repairs. He was the son of Berekiah. Berekiah was the son of Meshezabel. Next to Meshullam, Zadok also made some repairs. He was the son of Baana. 5Some men from Tekoa repaired the next part of the wall. But their nobles refused to do any work at all. They didn’t pay any attention to the people who were in charge of the work.
6Joiada and Meshullam repaired the Jeshanah Gate. Joiada was the son of Paseah. Meshullam was the son of Besodeiah. Joiada and Meshullam laid the beams of the gate. They put in place its doors with their metal bolts and bars. 7Next to them, some men from Gibeon and Mizpah made repairs. They included Melatiah from Gibeon and Jadon from Meronoth. Those places were under the authority of the governor of the land west of the Euphrates River. 8Uzziel repaired the next part of the wall. He made his living by working with gold. He was the son of Harhaiah. Hananiah made repairs on the next part. He made his living by making perfume. So the wall of Jerusalem was made like new again all the way to the Broad Wall. 9Rephaiah repaired the next part. He was the son of Hur. Rephaiah ruled over half of the territory where Jerusalem was located. 10Jedaiah repaired the part of the wall that was across from his house. He was the son of Harumaph. Hattush made repairs next to Jedaiah. Hattush was the son of Hashabneiah. 11Malkijah and Hasshub repaired another part of the wall. They also repaired the Tower of the Ovens. Malkijah was the son of Harim. Hasshub was the son of Pahath-Moab. 12Shallum repaired the next part. His daughters helped him. He was the son of Hallohesh. Shallum ruled over the other half of the territory where Jerusalem was located.
13Hanun repaired the Valley Gate. Some people who lived in Zanoah helped him. They rebuilt it. They put in place its doors with their metal bolts and bars. They also repaired 1,500 feet of the wall. They repaired it all the way to the Dung Gate.
14Malkijah repaired the Dung Gate. He was the son of Rekab. Malkijah ruled over the territory where Beth Hakkerem was located. He rebuilt the gate. He put in place its doors with their metal bolts and bars.
15Shallun repaired the Fountain Gate. He was the son of Kol-Hozeh. Shallun ruled over the territory where Mizpah was located. He rebuilt the gate. He put a roof over it. And he put in place the doors of the gate with their metal bolts and bars. He also repaired the wall by the Pool of Siloam. It was near the King’s Garden. Shallun repaired the wall as far as the steps that go down from the City of David. 16Next to Shallun, Nehemiah made some repairs. He was the son of Azbuk. Nehemiah ruled over half of the territory where Beth Zur was located. He repaired the wall up to the part that was across from the tombs of David. He repaired it all the way to the man-made pool and the House of the Heroes.
17Next to Nehemiah, some Levites made repairs. They worked under the direction of Rehum. He was the son of Bani. Next to Rehum, Hashabiah made repairs for his territory. He ruled over half of the territory where Keilah was located. 18Next to him, other Levites made some repairs. They worked under the direction of Binnui. He was the son of Henadad. Binnui ruled over the other half of the territory where Keilah was located. 19Next to Binnui, Ezer repaired another part of the wall. He was the son of Jeshua. Ezer ruled over Mizpah. He repaired the part across from the place that went up to the storeroom where the weapons were kept. He repaired the wall up to the angle of the wall. 20Next to Ezer, Baruch worked hard to repair another part of the wall. He was the son of Zabbai. He repaired the part from the angle of the wall to the entrance to Eliashib’s house. Eliashib was the high priest. 21Next to Baruch, Meremoth repaired another part. He was the son of Uriah. Uriah was the son of Hakkoz. Meremoth repaired the part from the entrance to Eliashib’s house to the end of the house.
22Next to Meremoth, some priests from the surrounding area made repairs. 23Next to them, Benjamin and Hasshub repaired the part of the wall that was in front of their house. Next to them, Azariah repaired the part that was beside his house. He was the son of Maaseiah. Maaseiah was the son of Ananiah. 24Next to Azariah, Binnui made repairs on another part. Binnui was the son of Henadad. Binnui repaired the wall from Azariah’s house to the angle and the corner. 25Palal worked across from the angle. He was the son of Uzai. Palal also worked across from the tower that was part of the upper palace. It was near the courtyard of the guard. Next to him, Pedaiah made some repairs. He was the son of Parosh. 26The temple servants who lived on the hill of Ophel helped Pedaiah. They repaired the wall up to the part that was across from the Water Gate. It was toward the east and the palace tower. 27Next to the temple servants, the men from Tekoa repaired another part. They made repairs from the large palace tower to the wall of Ophel.
28The priests made repairs above the Horse Gate. Each priest repaired the part of the wall that was in front of his own house. 29Next to them, Zadok made repairs across from his house. He was the son of Immer. Next to Zadok, Shemaiah made some repairs. He was the son of Shekaniah. Shemaiah guarded the East Gate. 30Next to him, Hananiah and Hanun repaired another part of the wall. Hananiah was the son of Shelemiah. Hanun was the sixth son of Zalaph. Next to Hananiah and Hanun, Meshullam made some repairs. He was the son of Berekiah. Meshullam repaired the part that was across from where he lived. 31Next to him, Malkijah made some repairs. He made his living by working with gold. He repaired the wall up to the house of the temple servants and the traders. It was across from the Inspection Gate. He also repaired the wall as far as the room above the corner. 32The traders and those who made their living by working with gold made some repairs. They repaired the wall from the room above the corner to the Sheep Gate.
