La parabole des dix jeunes filles
1Ce jour-là, il en sera du royaume des cieux comme de dix jeunes filles qui prirent leurs lampes et s’en allèrent à la rencontre du marié. 2Cinq d’entre elles étaient insensées, les cinq autres étaient avisées : 3les jeunes filles insensées prirent leurs lampes sans penser à emporter de réserve d’huile, 4mais celles qui étaient avisées prirent, avec leurs lampes, des flacons contenant de l’huile.
5Comme le marié se faisait attendre, elles s’assoupirent toutes et finirent par céder au sommeil. 6A minuit, un cri retentit : « Voici l’époux ! Allez à sa rencontre ! »
7Toutes les jeunes filles se levèrent et préparèrent leurs lampes. 8Alors les jeunes filles insensées s’adressèrent à celles qui étaient avisées : « Donnez-nous de votre huile, car nos lampes sont en train de s’éteindre. »
9Mais celles-ci leur répondirent : « Non ! Il n’y en aurait jamais assez pour nous et pour vous. Courez plutôt vous en acheter chez le marchand. »
10Elles partirent en chercher. Pendant ce temps, le marié arriva : celles qui étaient prêtes entrèrent avec lui dans la salle de noces, et l’on ferma la porte.
11Plus tard, les autres jeunes filles arrivèrent à leur tour ; mais elles eurent beau crier : « Seigneur, Seigneur, ouvre-nous ! » 12Il leur répondit : « Vraiment, je vous l’assure : je ne sais pas qui vous êtes. »
13C’est pourquoi, ajouta Jésus, tenez-vous en éveil, car vous ne savez ni le jour, ni l’heure de ma venue.
La parabole de l’argent à faire fructifier
(Lc 19.12-27)
14Il en sera comme d’un homme qui partit pour un voyage : il convoqua ses serviteurs et leur confia l’administration de ses biens. 15Il remit à l’un cinq lingots25.15 Il s’agit de talents. Le talent équivalait à dix fois le salaire annuel d’un ouvrier., à un autre deux, et à un troisième un seul, en tenant compte des capacités personnelles de chacun. Puis il s’en alla. 16Celui qui avait reçu les cinq lingots se mit aussitôt à les faire fructifier, de sorte qu’il en gagna cinq autres. 17Celui qui en avait reçu deux fit de même et en gagna deux autres. 18Quant à celui qui n’en avait reçu qu’un, il s’en alla creuser un trou dans la terre pour y cacher l’argent de son maître.
19Longtemps après, le maître de ces serviteurs revint et leur fit rendre compte de leur gérance.
20Celui qui avait reçu les cinq lingots se présenta, apportant les cinq lingots supplémentaires qu’il avait gagnés.
« Maître, dit-il, tu m’avais remis cinq lingots, j’en ai gagné cinq autres. Les voici.
21– Très bien, lui dit son maître, tu es un bon serviteur, en qui l’on peut avoir confiance. Tu t’es montré fidèle en peu de choses. C’est pourquoi je t’en confierai de plus importantes. Viens partager la joie de ton maître ! »
22Celui qui avait reçu les deux lingots se présenta aussi et dit : « Maître, tu m’avais remis deux lingots, j’en ai gagné deux autres. Les voici.
23– Très bien, lui dit son maître, tu es un bon serviteur, en qui l’on peut avoir confiance. Tu t’es montré fidèle en peu de choses. C’est pourquoi je t’en confierai de plus importantes. Viens partager la joie de ton maître ! »
24Enfin, celui qui n’avait reçu qu’un lingot vint à son tour et dit : « Maître, je savais que tu es un homme dur : tu moissonnes là où tu n’as rien semé, tu récoltes où tu n’as pas répandu de semence. 25Alors, j’ai pris peur et je suis allé cacher ton argent dans la terre. Voilà : prends ce qui t’appartient. »
26Mais son maître lui répondit : « Vaurien ! Fainéant ! Tu savais que je moissonne là où je n’ai rien semé et que je récolte là où je n’ai pas répandu de semence ! 27Eh bien, tu aurais dû placer mon argent chez les banquiers et, à mon retour, j’aurais récupéré le capital et les intérêts. 28Qu’on lui retire donc le lingot et qu’on le donne à celui qui en a déjà dix.
29Car à celui qui a, on donnera encore, et il sera dans l’abondance. Mais à celui qui n’a pas, on ôtera même ce qu’il a. 30Quant à ce vaurien, jetez-le dans les ténèbres du dehors, où il y aura des pleurs et d’amers regrets. »
Le jugement dernier
31Quand le Fils de l’homme viendra dans sa gloire, avec tous ses anges, il prendra place sur son trône glorieux. 32Tous les peuples de la terre seront rassemblés devant lui. Alors il les divisera en deux groupes – tout comme le berger fait le tri entre les brebis et les boucs. 33Il placera les brebis à sa droite et les boucs à sa gauche. 34Après quoi, le roi dira à ceux qui seront à sa droite : « Venez, vous qui êtes bénis par mon Père : prenez possession du royaume qu’il a préparé pour vous depuis la création du monde. 35Car j’ai eu faim, et vous m’avez donné à manger. J’ai eu soif, et vous m’avez donné à boire. J’étais un étranger, et vous m’avez accueilli chez vous. 36J’étais nu, et vous m’avez donné des vêtements. J’étais malade, et vous m’avez soigné. J’étais en prison, et vous êtes venus à moi. »
37Alors, les justes lui demanderont : « Mais, Seigneur, quand t’avons-nous vu avoir faim, et t’avons-nous donné à manger ? Ou avoir soif, et t’avons-nous donné à boire ? 38Ou quand t’avons-nous vu étranger et t’avons-nous accueilli ? Ou nu, et t’avons-nous vêtu ? 39Ou malade ou prisonnier, et sommes-nous venus te rendre visite ? »
40Et le roi leur répondra : « Vraiment, je vous l’assure : chaque fois que vous avez fait cela à l’un de ces plus petits de mes frères, c’est à moi-même que vous l’avez fait. »
41Puis il se tournera vers ceux qui seront à sa gauche : « Retirez-vous loin de moi, vous que Dieu a maudits, et allez dans le feu éternel préparé pour le diable et ses anges. 42Car j’ai eu faim, et vous ne m’avez rien donné à manger. J’ai eu soif, et vous ne m’avez rien donné à boire. 43J’étais un étranger, et vous ne m’avez pas accueilli chez vous. J’étais nu, et vous ne m’avez pas donné de vêtements. J’étais malade et en prison, et vous n’avez pas pris soin de moi. »
44Alors, ils lui demanderont à leur tour : « Mais, Seigneur, quand t’avons-nous vu souffrant de la faim ou de la soif ; quand t’avons-nous vu étranger, nu, malade ou en prison, et avons-nous négligé de te rendre service ? »
45Alors il leur répondra : « Vraiment, je vous l’assure : chaque fois que vous n’avez pas fait cela à l’un de ces plus petits, c’est à moi que vous avez manqué de le faire. »
46Et ils s’en iront au châtiment éternel. Tandis que les justes entreront dans la vie éternelle.
The Story of Ten Bridesmaids
1“Here is what the kingdom of heaven will be like at that time. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went out to meet the groom. 2Five of them were foolish. Five were wise. 3The foolish ones took their lamps but didn’t take any olive oil with them. 4The wise ones took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5The groom did not come for a long time. So the bridesmaids all grew tired and fell asleep.
6“At midnight someone cried out, ‘Here’s the groom! Come out to meet him!’
7“Then all the bridesmaids woke up and got their lamps ready. 8The foolish ones said to the wise ones, ‘Give us some of your oil. Our lamps are going out.’
9“ ‘No,’ they replied. ‘There may not be enough for all of us. Instead, go to those who sell oil. Buy some for yourselves.’
10“So they went to buy the oil. But while they were on their way, the groom arrived. The bridesmaids who were ready went in with him to the wedding dinner. Then the door was shut.
11“Later, the other bridesmaids also came. ‘Sir! Sir!’ they said. ‘Open the door for us!’
12“But he replied, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. I don’t know you.’
13“So keep watch. You do not know the day or the hour that the groom will come.
The Story of Three Slaves
14“Again, here is what the kingdom of heaven will be like. A man was going on a journey. He sent for his slaves and put them in charge of his money. 15He gave five bags of gold to one. He gave two bags to another. And he gave one bag to the third. The man gave each slave the amount of money he knew the slave could take care of. Then he went on his journey. 16The slave who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work. He earned five bags more. 17The one with the two bags of gold earned two more. 18But the man who had received one bag went and dug a hole in the ground. He hid his master’s money in it.
19“After a long time the master of those slaves returned. He wanted to collect all the money they had earned. 20The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you trusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have earned five more.’
21“His master replied, ‘You have done well, good and faithful slave! You have been faithful with a few things. I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
22“The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you trusted me with two bags of gold. See, I have earned two more.’
23“His master replied, ‘You have done well, good and faithful slave! You have been faithful with a few things. I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
24“Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man. You harvest where you have not planted. You gather crops where you have not scattered seed. 25So I was afraid. I went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’
26“His master replied, ‘You evil, lazy slave! So you knew that I harvest where I have not planted? You knew that I gather crops where I have not scattered seed? 27Well then, you should have put my money in the bank. When I returned, I would have received it back with interest.’
28“Then his master commanded the other slaves, ‘Take the bag of gold from him. Give it to the one who has ten bags. 29Everyone who has will be given more. They will have more than enough. And what about anyone who doesn’t have? Even what they have will be taken away from them. 30Throw that worthless slave outside. There in the darkness, people will weep and grind their teeth.’
The Sheep and the Goats
31“The Son of Man will come in all his glory. All the angels will come with him. Then he will sit in glory on his throne. 32All the nations will be gathered in front of him. He will separate the people into two groups. He will be like a shepherd who separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will put the sheep to his right and the goats to his left.
34“Then the King will speak to those on his right. He will say, ‘My Father has blessed you. Come and take what is yours. It is the kingdom prepared for you since the world was created. 35I was hungry. And you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty. And you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger. And you invited me in. 36I needed clothes. And you gave them to me. I was sick. And you took care of me. I was in prison. And you came to visit me.’
37“Then the people who have done what is right will answer him. ‘Lord,’ they will ask, ‘when did we see you hungry and feed you? When did we see you thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you as a stranger and invite you in? When did we see you needing clothes and give them to you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40“The King will reply, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. Anything you did for one of the least important of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
41“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘You are cursed! Go away from me into the fire that burns forever. It has been prepared for the devil and his angels. 42I was hungry. But you gave me nothing to eat. I was thirsty. But you gave me nothing to drink. 43I was a stranger. But you did not invite me in. I needed clothes. But you did not give me any. I was sick and in prison. But you did not take care of me.’
44“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty and not help you? When did we see you as a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison and not help you?’
45“He will reply, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. Anything you didn’t do for one of the least important of these, you didn’t do for me.’
46“Then they will go away to be punished forever. But those who have done what is right will receive eternal life.”
