Préparation du ministère de Jésus
Jean-Baptiste, messager de Dieu
(Mt 3.1-10 ; Mc 1.1-6)
1La quinzième année du règne de l’empereur Tibère3.1 Successeur d’Auguste, empereur à Rome de 14 à 37 apr. J.-C. Jean a donc commencé son ministère aux environs de l’année 28., Ponce Pilate3.1 Ponce Pilate fut gouverneur du territoire israélite de 26 à 36 apr. J.-C. était gouverneur de la Judée, Hérode régnait sur la Galilée comme tétrarque, son frère Philippe sur l’Iturée et la Trachonitide, Lysanias sur l’Abilène3.1 L’Iturée et la Trachonitide sont deux régions situées au sud-est du Liban. l’Abilène: district situé à 27 kilomètres au nord-ouest de Damas.. 2Hanne et Caïphe étaient grands-prêtres3.2 Hanne avait été grand-prêtre avant l’an 15. Il continuait à exercer son influence sous Caïphe, son successeur (qui était son gendre), titulaire de l’office de 18 à 36..
Cette année-là, Dieu adressa la parole à Jean, fils de Zacharie, dans le désert. 3Jean se mit à parcourir toute la région du Jourdain. Il appelait les gens à se faire baptiser en signe d’un profond changement3.3 Autres traductions : se faire baptiser en signe de repentance, ou pour indiquer qu’ils changeaient de comportement., afin de recevoir le pardon de leurs péchés. 4Ainsi s’accomplit ce que le prophète Esaïe avait écrit dans son livre :
On entend la voix de quelqu’un
qui crie dans le désert :
Préparez le chemin pour le Seigneur,
faites-lui des sentiers droits.
5Toute vallée sera comblée,
toute montagne et toute colline seront abaissées,
les voies tortueuses deviendront droites,
les chemins rocailleux seront nivelés,
6et tous les hommes verront
le salut de Dieu3.6 Es 40.3-5 cité selon l’ancienne version grecque..
7Jean disait à ceux qui venaient en foule se faire baptiser par lui : Espèces de vipères ! Qui vous a enseigné à fuir la colère de Dieu qui va se manifester ? 8Produisez plutôt pour fruits des actes qui montrent que vous avez changé3.8 Autre traduction : que vous vous repentez.. Ne vous contentez pas de répéter en vous-mêmes : « Nous sommes les descendants d’Abraham ! » Car, regardez ces pierres : je vous déclare que Dieu peut en faire des enfants d’Abraham.
9La hache est déjà sur le point d’attaquer les arbres à la racine. Tout arbre qui ne produit pas de bon fruit sera coupé et jeté au feu.
10Les foules lui demandèrent alors : Que devons-nous faire ?
11Il leur répondit : Si quelqu’un a deux chemises, qu’il en donne une à celui qui n’en a pas. Si quelqu’un a de quoi manger, qu’il partage avec celui qui n’a rien.
12Il y avait des collecteurs d’impôts qui venaient se faire baptiser. Ils demandèrent à Jean : Maître, que devons-nous faire ?
13– N’exigez rien de plus que ce qui a été fixé, leur répondit-il.
14Des soldats le questionnèrent aussi : Et nous, que devons-nous faire ?
– N’extorquez d’argent à personne et ne dénoncez personne à tort : contentez-vous de votre solde.
(Mt 3.11-12 ; Mc 1.7-8 ; Jn 1.19-28)
15Le peuple était plein d’espoir et chacun se demandait si Jean n’était pas le Messie.
16Il répondit à tous : Moi je vous baptise dans l’eau. Mais quelqu’un va venir, qui est plus puissant que moi. Je ne suis même pas digne de dénouer la lanière de ses sandales. Lui, il vous baptisera dans le Saint-Esprit et le feu. 17Il tient en main sa pelle à vanner, pour nettoyer son aire de battage, et il amassera le blé dans son grenier. Quant à la bale, il la brûlera dans un feu qui ne s’éteindra pas.
18Jean adressait encore beaucoup d’autres recommandations au peuple et lui annonçait la Bonne Nouvelle de l’Evangile.

19Mais il reprocha au gouverneur Hérode d’avoir épousé Hérodiade, la femme de son demi-frère3.19 Hérode vivait avec sa belle-sœur abandonnée par Philippe, son mari., et d’avoir commis beaucoup d’autres méfaits. 20Hérode ajouta encore à tous ses crimes celui de faire emprisonner Jean.
Le baptême de Jésus
(Mt 3.13-17 ; Mc 1.9-11)
21Tout le peuple venait se faire baptiser, et Jésus fut aussi baptisé. Or, pendant qu’il priait, le ciel s’ouvrit 22et le Saint-Esprit descendit sur lui, sous une forme corporelle, comme une colombe.
Une voix retentit alors du ciel : Tu es mon Fils bien-aimé, tu fais toute ma joie.
La généalogie de Jésus
(Mt 1.1-17)
23Jésus avait environ trente ans quand il commença à exercer son ministère. Il était, comme on le pensait, le fils de Joseph, dont voici les ancêtres : Héli, 24Matthath, Lévi, Melki, Yannaï, Joseph, 25Mattathias, Amos, Nahoum, Esli, Naggaï, 26Maath, Mattathias, Sémeïn, Yoseh, Yoda, 27Yoanan, Rhésa, Zorobabel, Shealtiel, Néri, 28Melki, Addi, Kosam, Elmadam, Er, 29Jésus, Eliézer, Yorim, Matthath, Lévi, 30Siméon, Juda, Joseph, Yonam, Eliaqim, 31Méléa, Menna, Mattata, Nathan, David, 32Isaï, Obed, Booz, Salma, Nahshôn, 33Amminadab, Admîn, Arni, Hetsrôn, Pérets, Juda, 34Jacob, Isaac, Abraham, Térah, Nahor, 35Seroug, Reou, Péleg, Héber, Shélah, 36Qaïnam, Arpakshad, Sem, Noé, Lémek, 37Mathusalem, Hénok, Yéred, Maléléel, Qénân, 38Enosh, Seth, Adam, qui était lui-même fils de Dieu.
John the Baptist Prepares the Way
1Tiberius Caesar had been ruling for 15 years. Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea. Herod was the ruler of Galilee. His brother Philip was the ruler of Iturea and Traconitis. Lysanias was ruler of Abilene. 2Annas and Caiaphas were high priests. At that time God’s word came to John, son of Zechariah, in the desert. 3He went into all the countryside around the Jordan River. There he preached that people should be baptized and turn away from their sins. Then God would forgive them. 4Here is what is written in the book of Isaiah the prophet. It says,
“A messenger is calling out in the desert,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord.
Make straight paths for him.
5Every valley will be filled in.
Every mountain and hill will be made level.
The crooked roads will become straight.
The rough ways will become smooth.
6And all people will see God’s salvation.’ ” (Isaiah 40:3–5)
7John spoke to the crowds coming to be baptized by him. He said, “You are like a nest of poisonous snakes! Who warned you to escape the coming of God’s anger? 8Live in a way that shows you have turned away from your sins. And don’t start saying to yourselves, ‘Abraham is our father.’ I tell you, God can raise up children for Abraham even from these stones. 9The ax is already lying at the roots of the trees. All the trees that don’t produce good fruit will be cut down. They will be thrown into the fire.”
10“Then what should we do?” the crowd asked.
11John answered, “Anyone who has extra clothes should share with the one who has none. And anyone who has extra food should do the same.”
12Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”
13“Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” John told them.
14Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”
John replied, “Don’t force people to give you money. Don’t bring false charges against people. Be happy with your pay.”
15The people were waiting. They were expecting something. They were all wondering in their hearts if John might be the Messiah. 16John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I am will come. I’m not good enough to untie the straps of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17His pitchfork is in his hand to toss the straw away from his threshing floor. He will gather the wheat into his barn. But he will burn up the husks with fire that can’t be put out.” 18John said many other things to warn the people. He also announced the good news to them.
19But John found fault with Herod, the ruler of Galilee, because of his marriage to Herodias. She was the wife of Herod’s brother. John also spoke strongly to Herod about all the other evil things he had done. 20So Herod locked John up in prison. Herod added this sin to all his others.
The Baptism and Family Line of Jesus
21When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened. 22The Holy Spirit came to rest on him in the form of a dove. A voice came from heaven. It said, “You are my Son, and I love you. I am very pleased with you.”
23Jesus was about 30 years old when he began his special work for God and others. It was thought that he was the son of Joseph.
Joseph was the son of Heli.
24Heli was the son of Matthat.
Matthat was the son of Levi.
Levi was the son of Melki.
Melki was the son of Jannai.
Jannai was the son of Joseph.
25Joseph was the son of Mattathias.
Mattathias was the son of Amos.
Amos was the son of Nahum.
Nahum was the son of Esli.
Esli was the son of Naggai.
26Naggai was the son of Maath.
Maath was the son of Mattathias.
Mattathias was the son of Semein.
Semein was the son of Josek.
Josek was the son of Joda.
27Joda was the son of Joanan.
Joanan was the son of Rhesa.
Rhesa was the son of Zerubbabel.
Zerubbabel was the son of Shealtiel.
Shealtiel was the son of Neri.
28Neri was the son of Melki.
Melki was the son of Addi.
Addi was the son of Cosam.
Cosam was the son of Elmadam.
Elmadam was the son of Er.
29Er was the son of Joshua.
Joshua was the son of Eliezer.

Mahalalel was the son of Kenan.

Enosh was the son of Seth.
