1Samson se rendit à Gaza16.1 Important port de maritime, situé dans le sud de la Philistie.. Il y vit une prostituée et entra chez elle. 2La nouvelle se répandit parmi les gens de Gaza qu’il se trouvait dans la ville. Pendant toute la nuit, ils gardèrent les issues et firent le guet à la porte de la ville. Cependant, ils se tinrent tranquilles pendant la nuit, se proposant de le tuer au point du jour. 3Mais Samson resta couché jusqu’au milieu de la nuit seulement ; à minuit, il se leva. Arrivé à la porte de la ville, il empoigna les deux battants avec les deux montants et les arracha avec la traverse, puis il chargea le tout sur ses épaules et le transporta jusqu’au sommet de la colline en face d’Hébron16.3 Ou : en direction d’Hébron. Dans ce cas, il s’agirait d’une hauteur située à une demi-heure à l’est de Gaza. Hébron était à 70 kilomètres de Gaza..
Samson trahi par Dalila
4Plus tard, Samson tomba amoureux d’une femme nommée Dalila qui habitait dans la vallée de Soreq16.4 Petite vallée proche du lieu de naissance de Samson.. 5Les princes des Philistins16.5 La Philistie était une confédération de cinq villes gouvernées par cinq princes. vinrent la trouver et lui dirent : Enjôle-le, et tâche de découvrir d’où lui vient sa force extraordinaire et comment nous pourrions réussir à le ligoter pour le maîtriser. Chacun de nous te donnera onze cents pièces d’argent16.5 Il s’agit de sicles d’argent. Somme considérable (82,5 kg d’argent) équivalente au prix de 275 esclaves (d’après le prix offert pour Joseph quelques siècles auparavant)..
6Dalila demanda à Samson : Dis-moi, je te prie, d’où te vient ta grande force et avec quoi il faudrait te lier pour te maîtriser.
7Samson lui répondit : Si on me lie avec sept cordes fraîches qui n’ont pas encore séché, je perdrai ma force et je deviendrai comme n’importe quel autre homme.
8Les princes des Philistins procurèrent à Dalila sept cordes fraîches qui n’étaient pas encore sèches, et elle ligota Samson avec ces cordes, 9tandis que des hommes se tenaient cachés chez elle, dans la chambre. Tout à coup, elle s’écria : Samson ! Les Philistins t’attaquent !
Il rompit les cordes comme se rompt une mèche d’étoupe quand elle a pris feu. Ainsi on ne découvrit pas le secret de sa force.
10Dalila dit à Samson : Voici : tu t’es moqué de moi, tu m’as raconté des mensonges. Maintenant, dis-moi donc, je te prie, avec quoi l’on pourrait te lier.
11Il lui répondit : Si on m’attache fortement avec des cordes neuves qui n’ont jamais servi, je perdrai ma force et deviendrai comme n’importe quel autre homme.
12Alors Dalila prit des cordes neuves dont elle le ligota. Puis elle s’écria : Samson ! Les Philistins t’attaquent !
Des hommes se tenaient de nouveau cachés dans la chambre. Mais il rompit les cordes comme un fil et les fit tomber de ses bras.
13Dalila dit à Samson : Jusqu’à présent, tu t’es moqué de moi et tu ne m’as raconté que des mensonges. Dis-moi enfin avec quoi il faudrait te lier.
Il lui répondit : Si tu tisses les sept tresses de ma tête dans la chaîne d’un métier à tisser et que tu les fixes au moyen d’une cheville, je perdrai ma force et je deviendrai comme n’importe quel autre homme16.13 Les v. 13 et 14 sont traduits d’après l’ancienne version grecque. 14Alors elle l’endormit, tissa les sept tresses de sa chevelure sur la chaîne du métier à tisser et les fixa avec la cheville. Puis elle s’écria : Samson ! Les Philistins t’attaquent !
Il se réveilla de son sommeil et arracha la cheville du métier avec la chaîne. 15Alors elle lui dit : Comment peux-tu prétendre que tu m’aimes alors que tu ne me fais pas confiance ! Voilà trois fois que tu t’es moqué de moi et que tu as refusé de m’indiquer d’où venait ta force extraordinaire.
16Tous les jours, elle le harcelait par ses paroles et le poussait à bout par ses instances. Excédé à en mourir, 17il finit par lui révéler son secret.
– Jamais encore, lui dit-il, mes cheveux et ma barbe n’ont été coupés, car j’ai été consacré à Dieu dès le sein maternel. Si l’on me rasait la tête, ma force m’abandonnerait et je deviendrais comme n’importe quel autre homme.
18Dalila comprit qu’il lui avait révélé son secret. Elle fit prévenir les princes des Philistins en leur disant : Venez, car cette fois-ci, il m’a dit son secret.
Ils se rendirent chez elle avec l’argent promis. 19Elle endormit Samson sur ses genoux, puis appela un homme pour lui couper les sept tresses de sa tête. Ainsi elle commença à le maîtriser, car il perdit sa force16.19 Le texte hébreu traditionnel a : et elle coupa, mais les versions anciennes ont : qui coupa.. 20Puis elle cria : Samson ! Les Philistins t’attaquent !
Il se réveilla de son sommeil et se dit : Je m’en tirerai comme les autres fois et je me dégagerai !
Mais il ne savait pas que l’Eternel s’était détourné de lui. 21Les Philistins se saisirent de lui et lui crevèrent les yeux16.21 Traitement souvent infligé aux prisonniers de guerre (1 S 11.2 ; 2 R 25.7)., puis ils l’emmenèrent à Gaza, le ligotèrent avec une double chaîne de bronze, et lui firent tourner la meule à grain dans la prison.
L’ultime vengeance de Samson
22Après avoir été rasés, ses cheveux commencèrent à repousser. 23Les princes des Philistins s’assemblèrent pour offrir un sacrifice important à Dagôn16.23 Divinité principale des Philistins. Son nom, en hébreu, signifie grain. Dagôn devait donc être un dieu de la végétation. Par la suite, à cause de l’assonance avec le terme hébreu dag, « poisson », Dagôn a été représenté par une statue mi-homme, mi-poisson. leur dieu et pour se livrer aux réjouissances. Ils disaient :
C’est notre Dieu ╵qui a livré ╵entre nos mains ╵notre ennemi : Samson.
24Quand le peuple le vit, il loua son dieu en disant :
C’est notre Dieu ╵qui a livré ╵entre nos mains ╵notre ennemi
qui ravageait ╵notre pays
et qui a fait ╵tant de victimes parmi nous.
25Comme ils étaient en joie, ils s’écrièrent : Appelez Samson, qu’il nous divertisse !
Ils firent sortir Samson de la prison et il dut se livrer à des pitreries devant eux, puis ils le placèrent entre les colonnes du bâtiment. 26Alors Samson demanda au jeune homme qui le conduisait par la main : Guide-moi ! Fais-moi toucher les colonnes qui soutiennent l’édifice pour que je puisse m’y appuyer.
27Or, le bâtiment était rempli d’hommes et de femmes ; tous les princes des Philistins s’y trouvaient et, sur la terrasse, il y avait trois mille personnes environ, hommes et femmes, qui regardaient Samson les amuser. 28Samson pria l’Eternel et dit : Seigneur Eternel ! Je te prie, interviens en ma faveur ! Rends-moi ma force, une dernière fois, ô Dieu, pour que je me venge en une fois des Philistins pour la perte de mes deux yeux !
29Il toucha les deux colonnes centrales qui soutenaient l’édifice et s’arc-bouta contre elles, de la main droite contre l’une et de la main gauche contre l’autre. 30Puis il dit : Que je meure avec les Philistins !
Puis il poussa de toutes ses forces, et le bâtiment s’écroula sur les princes et sur toute la foule qui s’y trouvait. Ainsi il fit périr plus de monde par sa mort que de son vivant. 31Ses frères et tous les siens descendirent pour emporter son corps et pour l’ensevelir entre Tsorea et Eshtaol dans le tombeau de Manoah, son père. Il avait été chef en Israël pendant vingt ans.
Samson and Delilah
1One day Samson went to Gaza, where he saw a prostitute. He went in to spend the night with her. 2The people of Gaza were told, “Samson is here!” So they surrounded the place and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate. They made no move during the night, saying, “At dawn we’ll kill him.”
3But Samson lay there only until the middle of the night. Then he got up and took hold of the doors of the city gate, together with the two posts, and tore them loose, bar and all. He lifted them to his shoulders and carried them to the top of the hill that faces Hebron.
4Some time later, he fell in love with a woman in the Valley of Sorek whose name was Delilah. 5The rulers of the Philistines went to her and said, “See if you can lure him into showing you the secret of his great strength and how we can overpower him so we may tie him up and subdue him. Each one of us will give you eleven hundred shekels16:5 That is, about 28 pounds or about 13 kilograms of silver.”
6So Delilah said to Samson, “Tell me the secret of your great strength and how you can be tied up and subdued.”
7Samson answered her, “If anyone ties me with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been dried, I’ll become as weak as any other man.”
8Then the rulers of the Philistines brought her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been dried, and she tied him with them. 9With men hidden in the room, she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!” But he snapped the bowstrings as easily as a piece of string snaps when it comes close to a flame. So the secret of his strength was not discovered.
10Then Delilah said to Samson, “You have made a fool of me; you lied to me. Come now, tell me how you can be tied.”
11He said, “If anyone ties me securely with new ropes that have never been used, I’ll become as weak as any other man.”
12So Delilah took new ropes and tied him with them. Then, with men hidden in the room, she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!” But he snapped the ropes off his arms as if they were threads.
13Delilah then said to Samson, “All this time you have been making a fool of me and lying to me. Tell me how you can be tied.”
He replied, “If you weave the seven braids of my head into the fabric on the loom and tighten it with the pin, I’ll become as weak as any other man.” So while he was sleeping, Delilah took the seven braids of his head, wove them into the fabric 14and16:13,14 Some Septuagint manuscripts; Hebrew replied, “I can if you weave the seven braids of my head into the fabric on the loom.” 14 So she tightened it with the pin.
Again she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!” He awoke from his sleep and pulled up the pin and the loom, with the fabric.
15Then she said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when you won’t confide in me? This is the third time you have made a fool of me and haven’t told me the secret of your great strength.” 16With such nagging she prodded him day after day until he was sick to death of it.
17So he told her everything. “No razor has ever been used on my head,” he said, “because I have been a Nazirite dedicated to God from my mother’s womb. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man.”
18When Delilah saw that he had told her everything, she sent word to the rulers of the Philistines, “Come back once more; he has told me everything.” So the rulers of the Philistines returned with the silver in their hands. 19After putting him to sleep on her lap, she called for someone to shave off the seven braids of his hair, and so began to subdue him.16:19 Hebrew; some Septuagint manuscripts and he began to weaken And his strength left him.
20Then she called, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”
He awoke from his sleep and thought, “I’ll go out as before and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him.
21Then the Philistines seized him, gouged out his eyes and took him down to Gaza. Binding him with bronze shackles, they set him to grinding grain in the prison. 22But the hair on his head began to grow again after it had been shaved.
The Death of Samson
23Now the rulers of the Philistines assembled to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god and to celebrate, saying, “Our god has delivered Samson, our enemy, into our hands.”
24When the people saw him, they praised their god, saying,
“Our god has delivered our enemy
into our hands,
the one who laid waste our land
and multiplied our slain.”
25While they were in high spirits, they shouted, “Bring out Samson to entertain us.” So they called Samson out of the prison, and he performed for them.
When they stood him among the pillars, 26Samson said to the servant who held his hand, “Put me where I can feel the pillars that support the temple, so that I may lean against them.” 27Now the temple was crowded with men and women; all the rulers of the Philistines were there, and on the roof were about three thousand men and women watching Samson perform. 28Then Samson prayed to the Lord, “Sovereign Lord, remember me. Please, God, strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge on the Philistines for my two eyes.” 29Then Samson reached toward the two central pillars on which the temple stood. Bracing himself against them, his right hand on the one and his left hand on the other, 30Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” Then he pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. Thus he killed many more when he died than while he lived.
31Then his brothers and his father’s whole family went down to get him. They brought him back and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of Manoah his father. He had led16:31 Traditionally judged Israel twenty years.
