1Au septième mois41.1 Septembre-octobre 587 av. J.-C. de l’année, Ismaël, fils de Netania, et petit-fils d’Elishama, qui était de descendance royale, et l’un des généraux du roi, vint avec dix hommes auprès de Guedalia, fils d’Ahiqam, à Mitspa. Pendant qu’ils étaient à table ensemble à Mitspa, 2Ismaël, fils de Netania, se leva soudain, avec les dix hommes qui l’accompagnaient, et, de leur épée, ils assassinèrent Guedalia, fils d’Ahiqam, petit-fils de Shaphân, que le roi de Babylone avait établi gouverneur du pays. 3Ils tuèrent aussi tous les Judéens qui étaient avec Guedalia à Mitspa, et les soldats chaldéens qui étaient sur place.
La tuerie de Mitspa
4Le lendemain du meurtre de Guedalia, alors que personne n’en avait encore connaissance, 5quatre-vingts hommes vinrent de Sichem, de Silo et de Samarie, la barbe rasée, les vêtements déchirés, la peau tailladée d’incisions41.5 Marques de deuil suite à la ruine de Jérusalem et du Temple.. Ils apportaient des offrandes de céréales et de l’encens pour les offrir dans le temple de l’Eternel. 6Ismaël, fils de Netania, sortit de Mitspa à leur rencontre. Il marchait en pleurant. Quand il les eut rejoints, il leur dit : Venez auprès de Guedalia, fils d’Ahiqam !
7Mais quand ils furent à l’intérieur de la ville, Ismaël, fils de Netania, et ses hommes les massacrèrent et jetèrent leurs cadavres dans une citerne. 8Il épargna cependant dix d’entre eux parce qu’ils avaient dit à Ismaël : Ne nous fais pas mourir, nous avons des provisions cachées dans les champs : du blé, de l’orge, de l’huile et du miel.
Il ne les fit donc pas mourir avec leurs concitoyens.
9La citerne dans laquelle Ismaël jeta les cadavres des hommes qu’il avait assassinés pour se débarrasser de Guedalia est celle41.9 pour se débarrasser de Guedalia est celle…: selon le texte hébreu traditionnel. L’ancienne version grecque a : est la grande citerne… Sur Asa et Baésha, voir 1 R 15.16-22. que le roi Asa avait fait creuser pour se défendre contre Baésha, roi d’Israël. Ismaël, fils de Netania, la remplit des cadavres de ses victimes. 10Puis il fit prisonniers le reste de la population de Mitspa, les filles du roi41.10 les filles du roi: expression qui peut aussi désigner des femmes qui ont fait partie de la cour du roi Sédécias. et tous les gens qui restaient dans la ville et que Nebouzaradân, le chef de la garde, avait confiés à Guedalia, fils d’Ahiqam. Ismaël, fils de Netania, partit pour se rendre chez les Ammonites, en les emmenant captifs.
Les prisonniers délivrés
11Yohanân, fils de Qaréah, et tous les chefs des troupes qui étaient avec lui apprirent les crimes commis par Ismaël, fils de Netania. 12Ils rassemblèrent tous leurs hommes et se mirent en route pour attaquer Ismaël, fils de Netania. Ils le rejoignirent près du grand étang de Gabaon41.12 A quelques kilomètres de Jérusalem (voir Jos 9.3).. 13Quand tous les prisonniers d’Ismaël virent Yohanân et tous les chefs de troupes qui l’accompagnaient, ils furent remplis de joie. 14Tous les gens qu’Ismaël avait emmenés prisonniers de Mitspa firent demi-tour et vinrent se joindre à Yohanân, fils de Qaréah. 15Mais Ismaël, fils de Netania, parvint à échapper à Yohanân avec huit hommes, et il se rendit chez les Ammonites.
16Alors Yohanân, fils de Qaréah, et tous les chefs des troupes qui l’accompagnaient prirent avec eux le reste de la population de Mitspa qu’Ismaël, fils de Netania, avait emmené captif après le meurtre de Guedalia, fils d’Ahiqam : les soldats, les femmes, les enfants et les fonctionnaires royaux, et ils les ramenèrent de Gabaon. 17Ils se mirent en route et firent étape au caravansérail de Kimham près de Bethléhem. Ils avaient l’intention de se rendre en Egypte 18pour fuir les Chaldéens, car ils avaient peur de représailles de leur part, parce qu’Ismaël, fils de Netania, avait assassiné Guedalia, fils d’Ahiqam, que le roi de Babylone avait établi gouverneur du pays.
1In the seventh month Ishmael son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, who was of royal blood and had been one of the king’s officers, came with ten men to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah. While they were eating together there, 2Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him got up and struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword, killing the one whom the king of Babylon had appointed as governor over the land. 3Ishmael also killed all the men of Judah who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, as well as the Babylonian41:3 Or Chaldean soldiers who were there.
4The day after Gedaliah’s assassination, before anyone knew about it, 5eighty men who had shaved off their beards, torn their clothes and cut themselves came from Shechem, Shiloh and Samaria, bringing grain offerings and incense with them to the house of the Lord. 6Ishmael son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping as he went. When he met them, he said, ‘Come to Gedaliah son of Ahikam.’ 7When they went into the city, Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the men who were with him slaughtered them and threw them into a cistern. 8But ten of them said to Ishmael, ‘Don’t kill us! We have wheat and barley, olive oil and honey, hidden in a field.’ So he let them alone and did not kill them with the others. 9Now the cistern where he threw all the bodies of the men he had killed along with Gedaliah was the one King Asa had made as part of his defence against Baasha king of Israel. Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled it with the dead.
10Ishmael made captives of all the rest of the people who were in Mizpah – the king’s daughters along with all the others who were left there, over whom Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam. Ishmael son of Nethaniah took them captive and set out to cross over to the Ammonites.
11When Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him heard about all the crimes Ishmael son of Nethaniah had committed, 12they took all their men and went to fight Ishmael son of Nethaniah. They caught up with him near the great pool in Gibeon. 13When all the people Ishmael had with him saw Johanan son of Kareah and the army officers who were with him, they were glad. 14All the people Ishmael had taken captive at Mizpah turned and went over to Johanan son of Kareah. 15But Ishmael son of Nethaniah and eight of his men escaped from Johanan and fled to the Ammonites.
Flight to Egypt
16Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him led away all the people of Mizpah who had survived, whom Johanan had recovered from Ishmael son of Nethaniah after Ishmael had assassinated Gedaliah son of Ahikam – the soldiers, women, children and court officials he had recovered from Gibeon. 17And they went on, stopping at Geruth Kimham near Bethlehem on their way to Egypt 18to escape the Babylonians.41:18 Or Chaldeans They were afraid of them because Ishmael son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed as governor over the land.
