Jacob s’installe à Béthel
1Dieu dit à Jacob : Pars, rends-toi à Béthel et fixe-toi là-bas. Tu y construiras un autel au Dieu qui t’est apparu quand tu fuyais ton frère Esaü.
2Alors Jacob dit aux gens de sa famille et à tous ceux qui étaient avec lui : Faites disparaître les dieux étrangers qui se trouvent au milieu de vous. Purifiez-vous et changez de vêtements ! 3Nous allons partir et nous rendre à Béthel, où je construirai un autel dédié au Dieu qui m’a exaucé lorsque j’étais dans la détresse et qui a été avec moi tout au long de ma route.
4Ils remirent à Jacob tous les dieux étrangers qu’ils avaient entre les mains et les boucles qu’ils portaient aux oreilles35.4 Amulettes devant assurer une protection magique. ; et Jacob les enterra sous le chêne qui est près de Sichem. 5Puis ils levèrent le camp. Dieu frappa de panique les villes environnantes, de sorte que personne ne poursuivit les fils de Jacob.
6Jacob arriva avec tous ceux qui l’accompagnaient à Louz – c’est-à-dire Béthel – au pays de Canaan. 7Il bâtit là un autel et appela ce lieu El-Béthel (Dieu de Béthel), car c’est à cet endroit que Dieu lui était apparu lorsqu’il fuyait loin de son frère. 8C’est là que mourut Débora, la nourrice de Rébecca ; elle fut enterrée près de Béthel, au pied du chêne que l’on appela depuis lors « le chêne des pleurs ».
9Dieu apparut encore à Jacob à son retour de Paddân-Aram et le bénit. 10Il lui dit : Ton nom est Jacob, mais tu ne seras plus appelé ainsi, ton nom sera Israël.
C’est ainsi que Dieu l’appela Israël. 11Et Dieu lui dit :
Je suis le Dieu tout-puissant.
Sois fécond et aie de nombreux descendants ;
un peuple, et même ╵tout un ensemble de peuples seront issus de toi.
Tu auras pour descendants des rois.
12Le pays que j’ai donné ╵à Abraham et à Isaac, ╵je te le donnerai
ainsi qu’à ta descendance après toi35.12 Voir Gn 17.4-8 ; 26.3..
13Puis Dieu se retira d’auprès de lui, du lieu où il lui avait parlé. 14Jacob érigea une stèle en pierre à l’endroit même où Dieu lui avait parlé, il y versa une libation et répandit de l’huile sur elle. 15Jacob donna au lieu où Dieu lui avait parlé le nom de Béthel.
La naissance de Benjamin et la mort de Rachel
16Jacob et sa famille quittèrent Béthel. Lorsqu’ils étaient encore à une certaine distance d’Ephrata35.16 Ancien nom de Bethléhem en Juda (Rt 1.2 ; Mi 5.1)., Rachel donna naissance à un enfant. Elle eut un accouchement difficile. 17Pendant les douleurs du travail, la sage-femme lui dit : Courage ! C’est encore un garçon.
18Mais elle se mourait. Dans son dernier souffle, elle le nomma Ben-Oni (Fils de ma douleur), mais son père l’appela Benjamin (Fils de bon augure). 19Rachel mourut, on l’enterra sur la route d’Ephrata, c’est-à-dire Bethléhem. 20Jacob érigea une stèle sur sa tombe ; c’est la stèle funéraire de Rachel qui subsiste encore aujourd’hui.
21Puis Israël leva le camp, il planta sa tente au-delà de Migdal-Eder. 22Pendant qu’il séjournait dans cette contrée, Ruben alla coucher avec Bilha, l’épouse de second rang de son père. Celui-ci l’apprit35.22 La version grecque ajoute : et en fut très affecté..
La liste des fils de Jacob
Jacob avait douze fils. 23Fils de Léa : Ruben, le premier-né de Jacob, Siméon, Lévi, Juda, Issacar et Zabulon. 24Fils de Rachel : Joseph et Benjamin. 25Fils de Bilha, servante de Rachel : Dan et Nephtali. 26Fils de Zilpa, servante de Léa : Gad et Aser. Tels sont les fils de Jacob, qui lui naquirent à Paddân-Aram.
La mort d’Isaac
27Jacob revint auprès de son père Isaac à Mamré, à Qiryath-Arba qui s’appelle aujourd’hui Hébron, où Abraham et Isaac avaient vécu35.27 Voir Gn 13.18.. 28Isaac atteignit l’âge de cent quatre-vingts ans, 29puis il rendit son dernier soupir et mourut. Il rejoignit ses ancêtres, âgé et comblé de jours. Ses fils Esaü et Jacob l’ensevelirent.
Jacob Returns to Bethel
1Then God said to Jacob, “Go up to Bethel and live there. Build an altar there to honor me. That’s where I appeared to you when you were running away from your brother Esau.”
2So Jacob spoke to his family and to everyone with him. He said, “Get rid of the statues of false gods you have with you. Make yourselves pure by washing and changing your clothes. 3Come, let’s go up to Bethel. There I’ll build an altar to honor God. He answered me when I was in trouble. He’s been with me everywhere I’ve gone.” 4So they gave Jacob all the statues of false gods they had. They also gave him their earrings. Jacob buried those things under the oak tree at Shechem. 5Then Jacob and everyone with him started out. The terror of God fell on the towns all around them. So no one chased them.
6Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz. Luz is also called Bethel. It’s in the land of Canaan. 7Jacob built an altar at Luz. He named the place El Bethel. There God made himself known to Jacob when he was running away from his brother.
8Rebekah’s attendant Deborah died. They buried her body under the oak tree outside Bethel. So it was called Allon Bakuth.
9After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram, God appeared to him again. And God blessed him. 10God said to him, “Your name is Jacob. But you will not be called Jacob anymore. Your name will be Israel.” So he named him Israel.
11God said to him, “I am the Mighty God. Have children so that there will be many of you. You will become the father of a nation and a community of nations. Your later family will include kings. 12I am giving you the land I gave to Abraham and Isaac. I will also give it to your children after you.” 13Then God left him at the place where he had talked with him.
14Jacob set up a sacred stone at the place where God had talked with him. He poured out a drink offering on it. He also poured olive oil on it. 15Jacob named the place Bethel. That’s where God had talked with him.
Rachel and Isaac Die
16They moved on from Bethel. Ephrath wasn’t very far away when Rachel began to have a baby. She was having a very hard time of it. 17The woman who helped her saw that she was having problems. So she said to Rachel, “Don’t be afraid. You have another son.” 18But Rachel was dying. As she took her last breath, she named her son Ben-Oni. But his father named him Benjamin.
19So Rachel died. She was buried beside the road to Ephrath. Ephrath was also called Bethlehem. 20Jacob set up a stone marker over her tomb. To this day, the stone marks the place where Rachel was buried.
21Israel moved on again. He set up his tent beyond Migdal Eder. 22While Israel was living in that area, Reuben went in and slept with Bilhah. She was the concubine of Reuben’s father. And Israel heard about it.
Here are the 12 sons Jacob had.
23Leah was the mother of
Reuben, Jacob’s oldest son.
Her other sons were Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun.
24The sons of Rachel were
Joseph and Benjamin.
25The sons of Rachel’s female servant Bilhah were
Dan and Naphtali.
26The sons of Leah’s female servant Zilpah were
Gad and Asher.
These were Jacob’s sons. They were born in Paddan Aram.
27Jacob came home to his father Isaac in Mamre. Mamre is near Kiriath Arba, where Abraham and Isaac had stayed. The place is also called Hebron. 28Isaac lived 180 years. 29Then he took his last breath and died. He was very old when he joined the members of his family who had already died. His sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
