4Voici l’histoire de ce qui est advenu au ciel et sur la terre lorsqu’ils furent créés.
Au temps où l’Eternel Dieu fit la terre et le ciel, 5il n’existait encore sur la terre aucun arbuste, et aucune herbe des champs n’avait encore germé, car l’Eternel Dieu n’avait pas fait pleuvoir sur la terre, et il n’y avait pas d’homme pour cultiver la terre. 6De l’eau se mit à sourdre et à irriguer toute la surface du sol.
7L’Eternel Dieu façonna l’homme avec de la poussière du sol, il lui insuffla dans les narines le souffle de vie, et l’homme devint un être vivant2.7 Allusion en 1 Co 15.45..
8L’Eternel Dieu planta un jardin vers l’orient : l’Eden, le pays des Délices. Il y plaça l’homme qu’il avait façonné.
9L’Eternel Dieu fit pousser du sol toutes sortes d’arbres portant des fruits d’aspect agréable et délicieux, et il mit l’arbre de la vie2.9 Voir Pr 3.18 ; Ap 2.7 ; 22.2, 14. au milieu du jardin. Il y plaça aussi l’arbre de la détermination du bien et du mal2.9 Autre traduction : l’arbre de la connaissance du bien et du mal (de même au v. 17)..
10Du pays d’Eden sortait un fleuve qui arrosait le jardin. De là, il se divisait en quatre bras.
11Le nom du premier est Pishôn : il contourne tout le pays de Havila où se trouve de l’or, 12un or d’excellente qualité. On trouve aussi dans cette contrée de l’ambre parfumée et la pierre précieuse appelée onyx.
13Le deuxième fleuve s’appelle Guihôn, il parcourt tout le pays de Koush2.13 Koush désigne habituellement le Soudan ou l’Ethiopie. Le fleuve serait donc le Nil. Certains situent cependant le pays de Koush, dont parle ce passage, en Mésopotamie, à l’est du Tigre, et l’identifient à la région du peuple des Kassites..
14Le troisième fleuve s’appelle le Tigre, c’est celui qui coule à l’orient de l’Assyrie.
Et le quatrième fleuve c’est l’Euphrate.
15L’Eternel Dieu prit l’homme et l’établit dans le jardin d’Eden pour le cultiver et le garder.
16Et l’Eternel Dieu ordonna à l’homme : Mange librement des fruits de tous les arbres du jardin, 17sauf du fruit de l’arbre de la détermination du bien et du mal. De celui-là, n’en mange pas, car le jour où tu en mangeras, tu mourras.
18L’Eternel Dieu dit : Il n’est pas bon que l’homme soit seul, je lui ferai une aide qui soit son vis-à-vis.
19L’Eternel Dieu, qui avait façonné du sol tous les animaux des champs et tous les oiseaux du ciel, les fit venir vers l’homme pour voir comment il les nommerait, afin que tout être vivant porte le nom que l’homme lui donnerait. 20L’homme donna donc un nom à tous les animaux domestiques, à tous les oiseaux du ciel et aux animaux sauvages. Mais il ne trouva pas d’aide qui soit son vis-à-vis.
21Alors l’Eternel Dieu plongea l’homme dans un profond sommeil. Pendant que celui-ci dormait, il prit une de ses côtes2.21 Autre traduction : une partie du côté de l’homme. et referma la chair à la place. 22L’Eternel Dieu forma une femme de la côte qu’il avait prise de l’homme, et il l’amena à l’homme.
23Alors l’homme s’écria :
Voici bien cette fois
celle qui est
os de mes os,
chair de ma chair.
On la nommera « Femme »
car elle a été prise
de l’homme.
24C’est pourquoi l’homme laissera son père et sa mère et s’attachera à sa femme, et les deux ne feront plus qu’un2.24 Cité en Mt 19.5 ; Mc 10.7-8 ; 1 Co 6.16 ; Ep 5.31.. 25L’homme et sa femme étaient tous deux nus sans en éprouver aucune honte.

4Here is the story of the heavens and the earth when they were created. The Lord God made the earth and the heavens.
5At that time, bushes had not yet appeared on the earth. Plants had not started to grow. The Lord God had not sent rain on the earth. And there was no one to farm the land. 6But streams came from the earth. They watered the entire surface of the ground. 7Then the Lord God formed a man. He made him out of the dust of the ground. God breathed the breath of life into him. And the man became a living person.
8The Lord God had planted a garden in the east in Eden. He put in the garden the man he had formed. 9The Lord God made every kind of tree grow out of the ground. The trees were pleasing to look at. Their fruit was good to eat. There were two trees in the middle of the garden. One of them had fruit that let people live forever. The other had fruit that let people tell the difference between good and evil.
10A river watered the garden. It flowed out of Eden. From there the river separated into four other rivers. 11The name of the first river is the Pishon. It winds through the whole land of Havilah. Gold is found there. 12The gold of that land is good. Onyx and sweet-smelling resin are also found there. 13The name of the second river is the Gihon. It winds through the whole land of Cush. 14The name of the third river is the Tigris. It runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is called the Euphrates.
15The Lord God put the man in the Garden of Eden. He put him there to farm its land and take care of it. 16The Lord God gave the man a command. He said, “You may eat fruit from any tree in the garden. 17But you must not eat the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you do, you will certainly die.”
18The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.”
19The Lord God had formed all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He had made all of them out of the ground. He brought them to the man to see what names he would give them. And the name the man gave each living creature became its name. 20So the man gave names to all the livestock, all the birds in the sky, and all the wild animals.
But Adam didn’t find a helper that was just right for him. 21So the Lord God caused him to fall into a deep sleep. While the man was sleeping, the Lord God took out one of the man’s ribs. Then the Lord God closed the opening in the man’s side. 22Then the Lord God made a woman. He made her from the rib he had taken out of the man. And the Lord God brought her to the man.
23The man said,
“Her bones have come from my bones.
Her body has come from my body.
She will be named ‘woman,’
because she was taken out of a man.”
24That’s why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife. The two of them become one.
25Adam and his wife were both naked. They didn’t feel any shame.
