La reprise des travaux
1Le prophète Aggée et le prophète Zacharie, petit-fils d’Iddo, s’adressèrent aux Juifs établis en Juda et à Jérusalem de la part du Dieu d’Israël qui était en eux5.1 Aggée a prophétisé du 29 août (Ag 1.1) au 18 décembre 520 (Ag 2.1, 10, 20) pour encourager le peuple à reprendre les travaux de reconstruction du Temple. Deux mois après son premier discours, Zacharie s’est associé à lui (Za 1.1).. 2Alors Zorobabel, fils de Shealtiel, et Josué, fils de Yotsadaq5.2 Sur Josué et Zorobabel, voir Ag 1.12 ; Za 3.4. Zorobabel était le petit-fils de Yehoyakîn (1 Ch 3.17)., se mirent au travail et reprirent la reconstruction du temple de Dieu à Jérusalem avec l’assistance des prophètes de Dieu. 3Aussitôt, Thathnaï, gouverneur de la province située à l’ouest de l’Euphrate, Shethar-Boznaï et leurs collègues vinrent les trouver et leur demandèrent : Qui vous a donné l’autorisation de rebâtir ce sanctuaire et de relever ces murs ?
4Alors nous leur avons indiqué les noms de ceux qui travaillaient à la reconstruction5.4 L’ancienne version grecque a : ils demandèrent aussi : Quels sont les noms de ceux qui travaillent à la reconstruction ?. 5Mais Dieu veillait sur les responsables des Juifs et on ne les obligea pas à interrompre leurs travaux en attendant que Darius ait reçu un rapport à ce sujet et que la réponse revienne.
La lettre adressée à l’empereur Darius
6Voici une copie de la lettre envoyée à l’empereur Darius par Thathnaï, gouverneur de la province située à l’ouest de l’Euphrate, Shethar-Boznaï et ses collègues, les préfets de la province à l’ouest de l’Euphrate. 7Le rapport qu’ils envoyèrent était conçu ainsi :
« A l’empereur Darius, tous nos vœux de prospérité ! 8Que le roi sache que nous nous sommes rendus dans le district de Juda jusqu’au grand temple de Dieu. Cet édifice est en cours de reconstruction en pierres de taille. Du bois est encastré dans les murs5.8 Voir 1 R 6.14-18, 36 ; 7.12.. Ce travail se poursuit avec soin et progresse bien grâce aux efforts des constructeurs. 9Nous avons interrogé les responsables parmi eux et nous leur avons demandé : Qui vous a donné l’autorisation de rebâtir ce sanctuaire et de relever ces murs ? 10Nous leur avons aussi demandé leurs noms pour te les faire connaître, et nous avons noté par écrit ces noms des hommes qui sont à leur tête.
11Voici la réponse qu’ils nous ont faite : Nous sommes les serviteurs du Dieu du ciel et de la terre et nous reconstruisons le temple qui avait été bâti et achevé il y a bien longtemps par un grand roi d’Israël5.11 Il s’agit de Salomon (voir 1 R 6).. 12Mais comme nos ancêtres ont irrité le Dieu du ciel, celui-ci les a livrés au pouvoir du Chaldéen Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone. Ce roi a détruit ce temple et déporté la population à Babylone5.12 Voir 2 R 25.8-12 ; 2 Ch 36.17-20 ; Jr 52.12-16.. 13Cependant, la première année du règne de Cyrus, roi de Babylone5.13 Voir note 1.1., le roi Cyrus a donné par un édit l’ordre de rebâtir ce temple. 14Et même, le roi Cyrus a retiré du temple de Babylone les objets d’or et d’argent que Nabuchodonosor avait emportés du temple de Jérusalem et qu’il avait transférés dans le temple de Babylone. Il les a donnés au nommé Sheshbatsar qu’il avait désigné comme gouverneur, 15et il lui a ordonné d’emporter ces objets et de les déposer dans le temple de Jérusalem, en stipulant que le temple devait être rebâti sur son ancien emplacement. 16Ce Sheshbatsar est donc venu ici et il a posé les nouvelles fondations du temple de Dieu qui est à Jérusalem. Depuis lors, et jusqu’à ce jour, ce temple est en reconstruction mais les travaux ne sont pas encore achevés.
17Maintenant, si l’empereur le trouve bon, que l’on fasse des recherches dans les archives royales là-bas, à Babylone pour voir s’il y a bien eu de la part du roi Cyrus un édit ordonnant la reconstruction de ce temple à Jérusalem. Puis que le roi veuille nous communiquer sa volonté à ce sujet. »
1Then the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, even unto them. 2Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem: and with them were the prophets of God helping them.
3¶ At the same time came to them Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who hath commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall? 4Then said we unto them after this manner, What are the names of the men that make this building?5.4 make: Chaldee, build 5But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, that they could not cause them to cease, till the matter came to Darius: and then they returned answer by letter concerning this matter.
6¶ The copy of the letter that Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and his companions the Apharsachites, which were on this side the river, sent unto Darius the king: 7They sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus; Unto Darius the king, all peace.5.7 wherein: Chaldee, in the midst whereof 8Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judea, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goeth fast on, and prospereth in their hands.5.8 great…: Chaldee, stones of rolling 9Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, Who commanded you to build this house, and to make up these walls? 10We asked their names also, to certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that were the chief of them. 11And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and build the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and set up. 12But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon. 13But in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon the same king Cyrus made a decree to build this house of God. 14And the vessels also of gold and silver of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought them into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one, whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor;5.14 governor: or, deputy 15And said unto him, Take these vessels, go, carry them into the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be builded in his place. 16Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not finished. 17Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search made in the king’s treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.
