L’entraide
1Si tu vois errer à l’aventure le bœuf de ton compatriote ou son mouton, ne t’en désintéresse pas ; au contraire, tu ne manqueras pas de le ramener à son propriétaire22.1 Pour les v. 1-4, voir Ex 23.4-5.. 2Si celui-ci habite trop loin de toi ou si tu ne sais qui est le propriétaire, tu prendras l’animal chez toi, et tu le garderas dans ta maison jusqu’à ce que son propriétaire vienne le réclamer, et alors tu le lui rendras. 3Tu agiras de même si tu trouves son âne, son manteau ou tout autre objet que ton compatriote aura perdu et que tu trouveras : tu n’as pas le droit de t’en désintéresser.
4Si tu vois l’âne de ton compatriote ou son bœuf tomber sur un chemin, ne t’en désintéresse pas, va aider son propriétaire à relever l’animal.
Contre les mélanges et autres lois
5Une femme ne portera pas des habits d’homme, ni un homme des vêtements féminins, car l’Eternel a en abomination ceux qui agissent ainsi. 6Si tu trouves en chemin un nid d’oiseau sur un arbre ou par terre, un nid avec une mère couvant des œufs ou abritant des oisillons, tu ne prendras pas la mère avec sa couvée ; 7laisse s’envoler la mère, et tu pourras prendre les petits. Si tu agis ainsi, tu seras heureux et tu vivras longtemps.
8Si tu construis une nouvelle maison, tu installeras une balustrade autour de ton toit en terrasse, pour que tu ne sois pas responsable de la mort de quelqu’un qui tomberait du toit22.8 Les toits d’Orient étaient des terrasses sur lesquelles on se promenait et où l’on dormait quand la nuit était trop chaude..
9Tu ne sèmeras pas d’autres plantes dans ta vigne, sinon tout ce qu’elle produira – les raisins comme la récolte des autres graines – deviendra sacré22.9 Pour les v. 9-11, voir Lv 19.19.. 10Tu ne laboureras pas en attelant un bœuf et un âne ensemble à la même charrue.
11Tu ne porteras pas de vêtement coupé dans un tissu de laine et de lin mélangés.
12Tu mettras des cordons aux quatre coins du vêtement dont tu t’envelopperas22.12 Voir Nb 15.38-40. Ce texte est à l’origine de la pratique juive de porter une écharpe de prière à franges. Les Juifs pieux portent aussi en permanence un vêtement avec des franges. Voir Mt 23.5..
L’épouse accusée à tort
13Supposons qu’un homme ait épousé une femme, qu’il se soit uni à elle et que, par la suite, il la prenne en aversion 14et invente contre elle une fausse accusation et lui fasse une mauvaise réputation, en disant qu’il ne l’a pas trouvée vierge quand il l’a épousée et s’est approché d’elle. 15Dans ce cas, les parents de la jeune femme apporteront aux responsables de la ville qui siègent aux portes de la cité les preuves de sa virginité. 16Le père leur déclarera : « J’ai donné ma fille en mariage à cet homme, mais il l’a prise en aversion, 17et maintenant, il invente contre elle une fausse accusation, prétextant ne pas l’avoir trouvée vierge. Or, voici les preuves de sa virginité. » Alors ils déplieront devant les responsables le drap de la nuit de noce. 18Les responsables de cette ville prendront l’homme et lui infligeront un châtiment, 19parce qu’il a porté atteinte à la réputation d’une vierge d’Israël, ils le condamneront à une amende de cent pièces d’argent qu’ils remettront au père de la jeune femme22.19 Amende sévère, double de celle imposée à celui qui séduit une vierge (voir v. 29). ; elle restera sa femme tant qu’il vivra : il n’aura plus le droit de la renvoyer.
20Si, au contraire, l’accusation s’avère fondée et si la virginité de la jeune femme n’est pas prouvée, 21on l’amènera à l’entrée de la maison de son père, ses concitoyens la feront mourir par lapidation parce qu’elle a commis une chose infâme en Israël en se déshonorant lorsqu’elle vivait encore dans la maison de son père. Ainsi vous ferez disparaître du milieu de vous la souillure qu’entraîne le mal.
Les relations sexuelles illicites
22Si l’on surprend un homme en train de coucher avec une femme mariée, tous les deux, l’homme et la femme, seront mis à mort. Ainsi vous ferez disparaître du milieu d’Israël la souillure qu’entraîne le mal22.22 Voir 1 Co 5.13..
23Si une jeune fille vierge est fiancée à quelqu’un et qu’un autre homme la rencontre dans la ville et couche avec elle, 24vous les amènerez tous les deux à la porte de la ville22.24 Voir 17.5. et vous les lapiderez pour les faire mourir. La jeune fille mourra parce qu’elle n’a pas appelé au secours, bien que cela se soit passé en ville, et l’homme parce qu’il a déshonoré la femme de son prochain. Ainsi vous ferez disparaître du milieu de vous la souillure qu’entraîne le mal22.24 Voir 1 Co 5.13.. 25Mais si c’est en pleine campagne que l’homme trouve la jeune fille fiancée et qu’il la viole, lui seul sera mis à mort. 26Vous ne ferez rien à la jeune fille, car elle n’a pas commis de faute qui mérite la mort. En effet, elle s’est trouvée dans le même cas que lorsqu’un homme attaque son prochain et le tue. 27Puisque c’est en plein champ que l’homme l’a rencontrée, elle aura eu beau crier, personne n’est venu à son secours.
28Si un homme rencontre une jeune fille non fiancée, qu’il s’empare d’elle et couche avec elle et qu’on les prenne sur le fait, 29l’homme qui a couché avec elle versera au père de la jeune fille cinquante pièces d’argent et devra l’épouser puisqu’il l’a violée. De plus, il ne pourra jamais la renvoyer tant qu’il vivra22.29 Voir Ex 22.15-16..

6¶ If a bird’s nest chance to be before thee in the way in any tree, or on the ground, whether they be young ones, or eggs, and the dam sitting upon the young, or upon the eggs, thou shalt not take the dam with the young: 7But thou shalt in any wise let the dam go, and take the young to thee; that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days.
8¶ When thou buildest a new house, then thou shalt make a battlement for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thine house, if any man fall from thence.

10¶ Thou shalt not plow with an ox and an ass together.
11¶ Thou shalt not wear a garment of divers sorts, as of woollen and linen together.

13¶ If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her, 14And give occasions of speech against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and say, I took this woman, and when I came to her, I found her not a maid: 15Then shall the father of the damsel, and her mother, take and bring forth the tokens of the damsel’s virginity unto the elders of the city in the gate: 16And the damsel’s father shall say unto the elders, I gave my daughter unto this man to wife, and he hateth her; 17And, lo, he hath given occasions of speech against her, saying, I found not thy daughter a maid; and yet these are the tokens of my daughter’s virginity. And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city. 18And the elders of that city shall take that man and chastise him; 19And they shall amerce him in an hundred shekels of silver, and give them unto the father of the damsel, because he hath brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days. 20But if this thing be true, and the tokens of virginity be not found for the damsel: 21Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father’s house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you.
22¶ If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they shall both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away evil from Israel.
23¶ If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her; 24Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour’s wife: so thou shalt put away evil from among you.
25¶ But if a man find a betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay with her shall die:22.25 force: or, take strong hold of 26But unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter: 27For he found her in the field, and the betrothed damsel cried, and there was none to save her.
28¶ If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; 29Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.
30¶ A man shall not take his father’s wife, nor discover his father’s skirt.
