L’année de la remise des dettes et de la libération des esclaves
1Tous les sept ans, vous remettrez les dettes. 2Voici ce qui concerne cette remise des dettes : lorsque l’année de la remise aura été proclamée en l’honneur de l’Eternel, tout créancier remettra la dette contractée envers lui par son prochain, qui est son compatriote, sans rien exiger de lui. 3Vous pourrez exiger des étrangers le remboursement de leurs dettes, mais vous annulerez les dettes15.3 Puisqu’ils n’étaient pas obligés, comme les Israélites, de laisser leurs terres en friche cette année-là, ils pouvaient donc gagner de quoi rembourser leurs dettes. de vos compatriotes envers vous. 4En fait, il ne doit pas y avoir de pauvres parmi vous, car l’Eternel votre Dieu veut vous combler de bénédictions dans le pays qu’il vous donne comme patrimoine foncier pour que vous en preniez possession – 5à condition toutefois que vous l’écoutiez pour obéir à tous les commandements que je vous transmets aujourd’hui et pour les appliquer, 6car l’Eternel votre Dieu vous bénira comme il vous l’a promis. Alors vous prêterez de l’argent à beaucoup de peuples étrangers, sans jamais avoir besoin d’emprunter. En effet, vous dominerez beaucoup de peuples, et aucun ne vous dominera.
7Si l’un de tes compatriotes tombe dans la pauvreté dans le pays que l’Eternel ton Dieu te donne, tu ne lui fermeras pas ton cœur et tu ne lui refuseras pas ton aide. 8Au contraire, tu lui ouvriras ta main toute grande et tu lui prêteras suffisamment selon ses besoins15.8 Voir Lv 25.35.. 9Garde-toi bien de nourrir dans ton cœur des pensées mesquines et de te dire : « C’est bientôt la septième année, l’année de la remise des dettes » et, pour cette raison, de regarder ton compatriote pauvre d’un mauvais œil sans rien lui donner. Car alors, il se plaindrait de toi à l’Eternel et tu porterais la responsabilité d’une faute. 10Donne-lui généreusement et non pas à contrecœur. Et pour cela, l’Eternel ton Dieu te bénira dans tout ce que tu feras et dans tout ce que tu entreprendras. 11En fait, il y aura toujours des nécessiteux15.11 Réminiscence en Mt 26.11 ; Mc 14.7 ; Jn 12.8. dans le pays : c’est pourquoi, je t’ordonne d’ouvrir toute grande ta main à ton compatriote, au malheureux et au pauvre dans ton pays.
12Si l’un de tes compatriotes hébreux, homme ou femme, se vend à toi comme esclave, il sera à ton service pendant six ans. La septième année15.12 Non l’année sabbatique, mais la septième année après l’entrée en service. Cette loi s’applique à ceux qui avaient dû se vendre comme esclaves parce qu’ils ne pouvaient rembourser une dette., tu lui rendras la liberté15.12 Pour les v. 12-18, voir Lv 25.39-46.. 13Mais le jour de sa libération, tu ne le laisseras pas partir les mains vides. 14Tu lui donneras en présent une part de ce que l’Eternel t’aura accordé comme bénédiction : du petit bétail, du blé et du vin. 15Souvenez-vous que vous avez vous-mêmes été esclaves en Egypte et que l’Eternel votre Dieu vous en a libérés. C’est pour cela que je vous donne aujourd’hui ce commandement.
16Il peut arriver que ton esclave te dise : « Je ne veux pas te quitter », parce qu’il s’est attaché à toi et à ta famille et qu’il est heureux chez toi15.16 Ex 21.5-6 ajoute une autre raison : s’il veut rester avec sa famille.. 17Alors tu prendras un poinçon et tu lui perceras l’oreille en l’appuyant contre le battant de ta porte15.17 Geste symbolisant le lien définitif entre lui et la famille de son maître.. Ainsi, il sera pour toujours ton serviteur. Tu agiras de même pour ta servante.
18Mais si tu dois rendre la liberté à un esclave, n’en sois pas contrarié, car après t’avoir servi pendant six ans, il t’a rapporté deux fois plus qu’un ouvrier salarié. Rends-lui donc sa liberté, et l’Eternel ton Dieu te bénira dans tout ce que tu entreprendras.

Loi sur les premiers-nés mâles du bétail
19Tu consacreras à l’Eternel ton Dieu tous les premiers-nés mâles de ton gros et ton petit bétail. Tu ne feras pas travailler un bœuf ou un taureau premier-né et tu ne tondras pas un mouton premier-né15.19 Voir Ex 13.12.. 20Tu les mangeras chaque année avec ta famille devant l’Eternel ton Dieu, au lieu que l’Eternel ton Dieu aura choisi15.20 Voir Dt 14.23.. 21Si l’un de ces animaux a quelque tare, s’il est boiteux ou aveugle, ou s’il a n’importe quel autre défaut grave, tu ne l’offriras pas en sacrifice à l’Eternel ton Dieu. 22Tu le mangeras là où tu habites et chacun pourra en manger, qu’il soit rituellement pur ou impur, comme lorsqu’on mange de la gazelle ou du cerf. 23Toutefois, tu n’en mangeras pas le sang, que tu répandras sur la terre comme de l’eau15.23 Voir Gn 9.4 ; Lv 7.26-27 ; 17.10-14 ; Dt 12.16..

7¶ If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother: 8But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth. 9Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest him nought; and he cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin unto thee.15.9 thought: Heb. word15.9 wicked: Heb. 12¶ And if thy brother, an Hebrew man, or an Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee, and serve thee six years; then in the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee. 13And when thou sendest him out free from thee, thou shalt not let him go away empty: 14Thou shalt furnish him liberally out of thy flock, and out of thy floor, and out of thy winepress: of that wherewith the LORD thy God hath blessed thee thou shalt give unto him. 15And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee: therefore I command thee this thing to day. 16And it shall be, if he say unto thee, I will not go away from thee; because he loveth thee and thine house, because he is well with thee; 17Then thou shalt take an aul, and thrust it through his ear unto the door, and he shall be thy servant for ever. And also unto thy maidservant thou shalt do likewise. 18It shall not seem hard unto thee, when thou sendest him away free from thee; for he hath been worth a double hired servant to thee, in serving thee six years: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all that thou doest.
19¶ All the firstling males that come of thy herd and of thy flock thou shalt sanctify unto the LORD thy God: thou shalt do no work with the firstling of thy bullock, nor shear the firstling of thy sheep. 20Thou shalt eat it before the LORD thy God year by year in the place which the LORD shall choose, thou and thy household. 21And if there be any blemish therein, as if it be lame, or blind, or have any ill blemish, thou shalt not sacrifice it unto the LORD thy God. 22Thou shalt eat it within thy gates: the unclean and the clean person shall eat it alike, as the roebuck, and as the hart. 23Only thou shalt not eat the blood thereof; thou shalt pour it upon the ground as water.
