La vision des sauterelles
1Or voici ce que me fit voir le Seigneur, l’Eternel. Il y avait un essaim de criquets7.1 D’après l’ancienne version grecque. Le texte hébreu traditionnel a : il produisait des criquets. au temps où le regain commençait à pousser. C’était après la coupe que l’on fait pour le roi7.1 La première coupe appartenait au roi, celle du regain revenait au peuple. Amos signifie par là que tout le peuple est visé par cette menace.. 2Quand les criquets eurent fini de dévorer l’herbe des champs, je dis : O Seigneur, Eternel, accorde le pardon, de grâce ! Sinon, comment Jacob pourra-t-il subsister, lui qui est si petit ?
3L’Eternel y renonça : Cela ne sera pas, dit l’Eternel.
4Puis voici ce que me fit voir le Seigneur, l’Eternel. Le Seigneur, l’Eternel, fit appel au feu pour exercer un jugement, et le feu fit tarir les nappes souterraines et consuma le territoire. 5Je dis : O Seigneur, Eternel, arrête, je t’en prie ! Sinon, comment Jacob pourra-t-il subsister, lui qui est si petit ?
6Et l’Eternel y renonça : Cela non plus n’aura pas lieu, le Seigneur, l’Eternel, le déclare.
L’étain
7Puis voici ce qu’il me fit voir : le Seigneur se tenait sur un mur en étain et il tenait de l’étain dans sa main. 8L’Eternel me dit : Que vois-tu, Amos ?
Et je dis : De l’étain.
Et le Seigneur me dit : Je vais mettre l’étain au milieu d’Israël, mon peuple. Et désormais, je ne lui laisserai plus rien passer. 9Les hauts lieux d’Isaac seront détruits, les sanctuaires d’Israël seront rasés, j’interviendrai avec l’épée contre la dynastie de Jéroboam.
La réaction du prêtre de Béthel
10Alors Amatsia, prêtre de Béthel, envoya un message à Jéroboam, roi d’Israël, pour lui dire : Amos conspire contre toi dans le royaume d’Israël, et le pays ne saurait tolérer plus longtemps tous ses discours. 11Voici, en effet, ce que déclare Amos : « Jéroboam mourra par l’épée, et Israël sera déporté loin de sa patrie. »
12Puis Amatsia dit à Amos : Va-t’en, prophète, enfuis-toi au pays de Juda ! Là-bas tu pourras gagner ton pain en prophétisant. 13Mais ne recommence pas à prophétiser à Béthel, car ici, c’est un sanctuaire du roi, c’est un temple du royaume.
14Amos répondit à Amatsia : Je ne suis pas un prophète de métier et je ne suis pas un disciple de prophètes. Je gagne ma vie en gardant des bœufs et en incisant les fruits des sycomores. 15Mais l’Eternel m’a pris de derrière le troupeau et il m’a dit : « Va prophétiser à Israël, mon peuple. » 16Maintenant, écoute ce que te dit l’Eternel : Tu me dis de ne plus prophétiser contre Israël, et de ne plus débiter des paroles7.16 Voir Mi 2.6. contre les descendants d’Isaac. 17C’est pourquoi l’Eternel te dit ceci :
Ta femme se prostituera ╵au milieu de la ville,
tes fils, tes filles ╵tomberont par l’épée,
tes champs seront partagés au cordeau.
Toi-même tu mourras ╵sur une terre impure ;
la population d’Israël ╵va être déportée
bien loin de son pays.
Amos Has Visions of Locusts, Fire and a Plumb Line
1The Lord and King gave me a vision. He was bringing large numbers of locusts on the land. The king’s share had already been harvested. Now the later crops were coming up. 2The locusts stripped the land clean. Then I cried out, “Lord and King, forgive Israel! How can Jacob’s people continue? They are such a weak nation!”
3So the Lord had pity on them.
“I will let them continue for now,” he said.
4The Lord and King gave me a second vision. He was using fire to punish his people. It dried up the deep waters. It burned the land up. 5Then I cried out, “Lord and King, please stop! How can Jacob’s people continue? They are such a weak nation!”
6So the Lord had pity on them.
“I will let them continue for now,” the Lord and King said.
7Then the Lord gave me a third vision. He was standing by a wall. It had been built very straight, all the way up and down. He was holding a plumb line. 8The Lord asked me, “What do you see, Amos?”
“A plumb line,” I replied.
Then the Lord said, “Look at what I am doing. I am hanging a plumb line next to my people Israel. It will show how crooked they are. I will no longer spare them.
9“The high places where Isaac’s people worship other gods will be destroyed.
The other places of worship in Israel will also be torn down.
I will use my sword to attack Jeroboam’s royal family.”
Amaziah Tells Amos to Stop Prophesying
10Amaziah was priest of Bethel. He sent a message to Jeroboam, the king of Israel. He said, “Amos is making evil plans against you right here in Israel. The people in the land can’t stand to listen to what he’s saying. 11Amos is telling them,
“ ‘Jeroboam will be killed by a sword.
The people of Israel will be taken away as prisoners.
They will be carried off from their own land.’ ”
12Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Get out of Israel, you prophet! Go back to the land of Judah. Earn your living there. Do your prophesying there. 13Don’t prophesy here at Bethel anymore. This is where the king worships. The main temple in the kingdom is located here.”
14Amos answered Amaziah, “I was not a prophet. I wasn’t even the son of a prophet. I was a shepherd. I also took care of sycamore-fig trees. 15But the Lord took me away from taking care of the flock. He said to me, ‘Go. Prophesy to my people Israel.’ 16Now then, listen to the Lord’s message. You say,
“ ‘Don’t prophesy against Israel.
Stop preaching against the people of Isaac.’
17“But the Lord says,
“ ‘Your wife will become a prostitute
in the city of Bethel.
Your sons and daughters will be killed by swords.
Your land will be measured and divided up.
And you yourself will die in another country.
The people of Israel will surely be taken away as prisoners.
They will be carried off from their own land.’ ”
