1– Mes frères et mes pères, dit-il, écoutez, je vous prie, ce que j’ai à vous dire pour ma défense.
2Lorsqu’ils l’entendirent parler en hébreu, le calme se fit plus grand encore. Paul reprit :
3Je suis juif. Je suis né à Tarse en Cilicie, mais j’ai été élevé ici à Jérusalem. C’est Gamaliel22.3 Gamaliel: voir note 5.34. qui fut mon maître ; il m’a enseigné avec une grande exactitude la Loi de nos ancêtres, et j’étais un partisan farouche de la cause de Dieu, comme vous l’êtes tous aujourd’hui. 4J’ai combattu à mort ce qu’on appelle la Voie, en faisant enchaîner et jeter en prison des hommes et des femmes. 5Le grand-prêtre et tout le Conseil des responsables du peuple peuvent témoigner que je dis vrai. Car c’est d’eux, précisément, que j’avais reçu des lettres de recommandation pour nos frères. Je suis alors parti pour Damas, bien résolu à faire enchaîner et à ramener à Jérusalem, afin de les faire punir, tous les adhérents de cette Voie que je trouverais là-bas.
6Comme j’étais en chemin et que j’approchais de Damas, tout à coup, vers midi, une vive lumière a resplendi du ciel et m’a enveloppé.
7Je suis tombé à terre et j’ai entendu une voix qui me demandait : « Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu ? » Je me suis écrié : 8« Qui es-tu Seigneur ? » Alors la voix m’a dit : « Je suis, moi, Jésus de Nazareth, que tu persécutes. »
9Ceux qui étaient avec moi ont bien vu la lumière, mais n’ont pas compris celui qui me parlait. 10J’ai demandé : « Que dois-je donc faire, Seigneur ? » Et le Seigneur m’a dit : « Relève-toi, va à Damas, et là, on te dira tout ce que tu devras faire ! »
11Mais je n’y voyais plus : l’éclat de cette lumière m’avait aveuglé. Alors mes compagnons m’ont pris par la main pour me conduire, et c’est ainsi que je suis arrivé à Damas.
12Il y avait là un certain Ananias, un homme pieux, qui observait fidèlement la Loi. Il était estimé de tous les Juifs de la ville. 13Il est venu me trouver, s’est tenu près de moi et m’a dit : « Saul, mon frère, recouvre la vue ! »
A l’instant même, je pus de nouveau voir et je l’ai vu.
14Alors il m’a dit : « Le Dieu de nos ancêtres t’a choisi d’avance pour te faire connaître sa volonté, pour que tu voies le Juste et que tu entendes sa voix, 15car tu seras son témoin devant tous les hommes pour leur annoncer tout ce que tu as vu et entendu. 16Et maintenant, pourquoi tarder ? Lève-toi, fais-toi baptiser et sois lavé de tes péchés en priant le Seigneur. »
17Un jour, après mon retour à Jérusalem, pendant que je priais dans la cour du Temple, je suis tombé en extase 18et j’ai vu le Seigneur. Il m’a dit : « Hâte-toi de quitter Jérusalem, car ses habitants n’accepteront pas ton témoignage à mon sujet. »
19J’ai répondu : « Mais, Seigneur, ils savent pourtant que j’allais de synagogue en synagogue pour faire emprisonner et fouetter ceux qui croient en toi. 20Lorsqu’on a versé le sang d’Etienne, ton témoin, j’étais là, en personne, j’approuvais ce qui se passait et je gardais les vêtements de ses meurtriers. »
21Le Seigneur m’a dit alors : « Va, je vais t’envoyer au loin vers les non-Juifs… »
Paul en prison
22La foule l’avait écouté jusque-là, mais, à ces mots, ils se mirent tous à crier : A mort ! Qu’on débarrasse la terre d’un tel individu ! Il n’a pas le droit de vivre !
23Ils hurlaient de plus en plus fort, agitaient leurs vêtements et jetaient de la poussière en l’air. 24Alors le commandant donna l’ordre de faire entrer Paul dans la citadelle et de le soumettre à la torture à coups de fouet, afin de savoir pourquoi les Juifs criaient ainsi contre lui.
25On était en train de l’attacher avec des courroies, quand il demanda à l’officier de service : Avez-vous le droit de fouetter un citoyen romain, et sans même l’avoir jugé ?
26Quand l’officier entendit cela, il courut avertir le commandant : Sais-tu ce que tu allais faire ? Cet homme est citoyen romain.
27Le commandant se rendit aussitôt auprès de Paul et lui demanda : Dis-moi, es-tu vraiment citoyen romain ?
– Oui, répondit-il.
28– Moi, reprit le commandant, j’ai dû payer très cher pour acquérir ce titre.
– Et moi, dit Paul, je le tiens de naissance.
29Aussitôt, ceux qui allaient le torturer le laissèrent. Le commandant lui-même commença à s’inquiéter à l’idée qu’il avait bel et bien fait enchaîner un citoyen romain.
Paul devant le Grand-Conseil
30C’est pourquoi, dès le lendemain, il voulut éclaircir l’affaire et savoir au juste de quoi les Juifs accusaient Paul. Il le fit délier et, après avoir convoqué les chefs des prêtres et tout le Grand-Conseil, il le fit descendre et le plaça en face d’eux.
1“Brothers and fathers,” Paul began, “listen to me now. I want to give you reasons for my actions.”
2When they heard that he was speaking to them in Aramaic, they became very quiet.
Then Paul said, 3“I am a Jew. I was born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but I grew up here in Jerusalem. I studied with Gamaliel. I was well trained by him in the law given to our people long ago. I wanted to serve God as much as any of you do today. 4I hurt the followers of the Way of Jesus. I sent many of them to their death. I arrested men and women. I threw them into prison. 5The high priest and the whole Council can be witnesses of this themselves. I even had some official letters they had written to their friends in Damascus. So I went there to bring these people as prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished.
6“I had almost reached Damascus. About noon a bright light from heaven suddenly flashed around me. 7I fell to the ground and heard a voice speak to me. ‘Saul! Saul!’ it said. ‘Why are you opposing me?’
8“ ‘Who are you, Lord?’ I asked.
“ ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth,’ he replied. ‘I am the one you are opposing.’ 9The light was seen by my companions. But they didn’t understand the voice of the one speaking to me.
10“ ‘What should I do, Lord?’ I asked.
“ ‘Get up,’ the Lord said. ‘Go into Damascus. There you will be told everything you have been given to do.’ 11The brightness of the light had blinded me. So my companions led me by the hand into Damascus.
12“A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a godly Jew who obeyed the law. All the Jews living there respected him very much. 13He stood beside me and said, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ At that very moment I was able to see him.
14“Then he said, ‘The God of our people has chosen you. He wanted to tell you his plans for you. You have seen the Blameless One. You have heard words from his mouth. 15Now you will tell everyone about what you have seen and heard. 16So what are you waiting for? Get up and call on his name. Be baptized. Have your sins washed away.’
17“I returned to Jerusalem and was praying at the temple. Then it seemed to me that I was dreaming. 18I saw the Lord speaking to me. ‘Quick!’ he said. ‘Leave Jerusalem at once. The people here will not accept what you tell them about me.’
19“ ‘Lord,’ I replied, ‘these people know what I used to do. I went from one synagogue to another and put believers in prison. I also beat them. 20Stephen was a man who told other people about you. I stood there when he was killed. I had agreed that he should die. I even guarded the coats of those who were killing him.’
21“Then the Lord said to me, ‘Go. I will send you far away to people who are not Jews.’ ”
Paul the Roman Citizen
22The crowd listened to Paul until he said this. Then they shouted, “Kill him! He isn’t fit to live!”
23They shouted and threw off their coats. They threw dust into the air. 24So the commanding officer ordered that Paul be taken into the fort. He gave orders for Paul to be whipped and questioned. He wanted to find out why the people were shouting at him like this. 25A commander was standing there as they stretched Paul out to be whipped. Paul said to him, “Does the law allow you to whip a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been found guilty?”
26When the commander heard this, he went to the commanding officer and reported it. “What are you going to do?” the commander asked. “This man is a Roman citizen.”
27So the commanding officer went to Paul. “Tell me,” he asked. “Are you a Roman citizen?”
“Yes, I am,” Paul answered.
28Then the officer said, “I had to pay a lot of money to become a citizen.”
“But I was born a citizen,” Paul replied.
29Right away those who were about to question him left. Even the officer was alarmed. He realized that he had put Paul, a Roman citizen, in chains.
Paul Is Taken to the Sanhedrin
30The commanding officer wanted to find out exactly what the Jews had against Paul. So the next day he let Paul out of prison. He ordered a meeting of the chief priests and all the members of the Sanhedrin. Then he brought Paul and had him stand in front of them.
