L’assassinat d’Ish-Bosheth et la réaction de David
1Lorsque Ish-Bosheth, fils de Saül, apprit qu’Abner était mort à Hébron, il en fut consterné et la peur s’empara de tout Israël.
2Parmi ceux qui étaient sous ses ordres, il y avait deux chefs de bandes appelés Baana et Rékab ; ils étaient fils de Rimmôn de Beéroth4.2 A environ 15 kilomètres de Jérusalem., des Benjaminites, car Beéroth faisait partie de Benjamin 3bien que, depuis lors, ses habitants se soient réfugiés à Guittaïm où leurs descendants habitent encore aujourd’hui.
4Or Jonathan, le fils de Saül, avait un fils qui était infirme des deux pieds. En effet, il avait cinq ans au moment de la bataille de Jizréel, et lorsqu’on avait appris ce qui était arrivé à Saül et Jonathan, sa nourrice l’avait pris pour s’enfuir. Dans sa précipitation, elle l’avait laissé tomber et il en était resté estropié. Son nom était Mephibosheth.
5Rékab et Baana, les deux fils de Rimmôn de Beéroth, se rendirent à l’heure la plus chaude dans la maison d’Ish-Bosheth, celui-ci était couché pour faire la sieste ; il était midi. 6-7Ils s’introduisirent dans la maison en apportant du blé, entrèrent dans la chambre à coucher d’Ish-Bosheth pendant qu’il reposait sur son lit, le frappèrent mortellement au ventre et le décapitèrent, puis ils prirent sa tête et s’enfuirent. Après avoir marché toute la nuit le long de la vallée du Jourdain, 8ils apportèrent la tête d’Ish-Bosheth au roi David à Hébron et lui dirent : Voici la tête d’Ish-Bosheth, fils de Saül, ton ennemi qui cherchait à te tuer. L’Eternel a vengé aujourd’hui le roi, mon seigneur, de Saül et de ses descendants.
9Mais David répondit à Rékab et à son frère Baana, fils de Rimmôn de Beéroth : L’Eternel qui m’a délivré de toute détresse est vivant ! 10A Tsiqlag, un homme est venu me dire : « Voici : Saül est mort », croyant m’annoncer une bonne nouvelle. Je l’ai fait saisir et exécuter pour le payer de sa « bonne nouvelle ». 11A plus forte raison vais-je payer des misérables qui ont assassiné un homme innocent sur son lit, dans sa maison. Oui, je vous demanderai compte du meurtre que vous avez commis, et je vous ferai disparaître de la surface de la terre.
12Là-dessus, David donna un ordre à ses hommes qui les tuèrent. Ensuite, ils leur tranchèrent les mains et les pieds qu’ils suspendirent au bord de l’étang d’Hébron. Ils prirent la tête d’Ish-Bosheth et l’enterrèrent dans le tombeau d’Abner à Hébron.
1And when Saul’s son heard that Abner was dead in Hebron, his hands were feeble, and all the Israelites were troubled. 2And Saul’s son had two men that were captains of bands: the name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the other Rechab, the sons of Rimmon a Beerothite, of the children of Benjamin: (for Beeroth also was reckoned to Benjamin:4.2 other: Heb. second 3And the Beerothites fled to Gittaim, and were sojourners there until this day.) 4And Jonathan, Saul’s son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.4.4 Mephibosheth: or, Merib-baal 5And the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went, and came about the heat of the day to the house of Ish-bosheth, who lay on a bed at noon. 6And they came thither into the midst of the house, as though they would have fetched wheat; and they smote him under the fifth rib: and Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped. 7For when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his bedchamber, and they smote him, and slew him, and beheaded him, and took his head, and gat them away through the plain all night. 8And they brought the head of Ish-bosheth unto David to Hebron, and said to the king, Behold the head of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul thine enemy, which sought thy life; and the LORD hath avenged my lord the king this day of Saul, and of his seed.
9¶ And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them, As the LORD liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all adversity, 10When one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good tidings, I took hold of him, and slew him in Ziklag, who thought that I would have given him a reward for his tidings:4.10 thinking…: Heb. he was in his own eyes as a bringer, etc4.10 who…: or, which was the reward I gave him for his tidings 11How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed? shall I not therefore now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth? 12And David commanded his young men, and they slew them, and cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged them up over the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-bosheth, and buried it in the sepulchre of Abner in Hebron.
