Le roi rend justice à la Sunamite
1Elisée dit à la femme dont il avait ressuscité le fils8.1 Voir 2 R 4. : Mets-toi en route et va à l’étranger avec ta famille. Allez vous installer où vous pourrez, car l’Eternel a décidé d’envoyer dans ce pays une famine qui sévira durant sept ans.
2La femme suivit le conseil de l’homme de Dieu : elle s’en alla avec sa famille et s’installa pendant sept ans dans le pays des Philistins8.2 Plus fertile que les montagnes d’Israël, moins menacé par les incursions des Syriens.. 3A la fin de la septième année, elle en revint et se rendit chez le roi pour implorer son intervention afin qu’on lui rende sa maison et ses terres. 4Le roi s’entretenait justement avec Guéhazi, le serviteur de l’homme de Dieu, et lui demandait : Raconte-moi donc toutes les grandes choses qu’Elisée a accomplies.
5Or, au moment précis où il lui racontait comment Elisée avait ramené un mort à la vie, la femme dont il avait ressuscité le fils arriva auprès du roi pour implorer son intervention au sujet de sa maison et de ses terres. Alors Guéhazi s’exclama : Mon seigneur le roi, voici la femme dont je te parlais et voici son fils qu’Elisée a rendu à la vie !
6Le roi interrogea la femme et elle lui raconta toute son histoire. Puis le roi mit à sa disposition l’un de ses chambellans auquel il dit : Fais restituer à cette femme tout ce qui lui appartient, et qu’on lui paie même une redevance pour ce que ses terres ont rapporté depuis le jour où elle a quitté le pays jusqu’à maintenant.
Hazaël rencontre Elisée et devient roi de Syrie
7Une autre fois, Elisée se rendit à Damas. Ben-Hadad, le roi de Syrie, était malade. On lui annonça que l’homme de Dieu était venu jusque-là. 8Le roi dit à Hazaël : Prends un cadeau, va trouver l’homme de Dieu et consulte l’Eternel par son intermédiaire pour savoir si je guérirai de cette maladie.
9Hazaël alla trouver Elisée en emportant un présent composé des meilleurs produits de Damas8.9 Damas était un centre commercial important au carrefour des routes entre l’Egypte, l’Asie Mineure et la Mésopotamie., chargés sur quarante chameaux. Lorsqu’il fut arrivé auprès de lui, il se tint devant lui et dit : Ton serviteur Ben-Hadad, roi de Syrie, m’envoie vers toi pour te demander s’il sortira vivant de cette maladie.
10Elisée lui répondit : Va et dis-lui : « Oui, certainement, tu guériras de cette maladie. » Cependant, l’Eternel m’a révélé qu’il va mourir.
11Puis le regard de l’homme de Dieu se figea, il fixa Hazaël avec intensité, jusqu’à ce que celui-ci rougisse de honte, puis il se mit à pleurer.
12Hazaël lui demanda : Pourquoi mon seigneur pleure-t-il ?
Elisée répondit : Parce que je sais tout le mal que tu feras aux Israélites, tu incendieras leurs villes fortifiées, tu massacreras leurs jeunes gens, tu écraseras leurs petits enfants et tu fendras le ventre de leurs femmes enceintes8.12 Voir 10.32 ; 12.18-19 ; 13.3, 22..
13Hazaël reprit étonné : Mais qu’est donc ton serviteur, pour accomplir de pareilles choses ? Je n’ai pas plus de valeur qu’un chien.
Elisée répliqua : L’Eternel m’a fait voir que tu deviendras roi de Syrie8.13 Voir 1 R 19.15..
14Hazaël quitta Elisée et revint auprès de son souverain qui lui demanda : Que t’a dit Elisée ?
Il répondit : Il m’a dit : « Oui, certainement tu guériras de cette maladie. »
15Le lendemain Hazaël prit une couverture, la trempa dans l’eau et en recouvrit le visage du roi qui mourut. Hazaël lui succéda sur le trône.
Le règne de Yoram sur Juda
(2 Ch 21.5-10, 20)
16La cinquième année du règne de Yoram, fils d’Achab, roi d’Israël, tandis que Josaphat était encore roi de Juda, Yoram, son fils, devint roi de Juda. 17Il avait trente-deux ans à son avènement et il régna huit ans à Jérusalem8.17 De 848 à 841 av. J.-C. Ne pas confondre Yoram et Ahazia de Juda avec Ahazia et Yoram d’Israël.. 18Il suivit l’exemple des rois d’Israël, agissant comme la dynastie d’Achab, car il avait épousé une fille d’Achab8.18 La femme de Yoram était Athalie, une fille d’Achab (v. 26 ; 2 Ch 18.1).. Il fit ce que l’Eternel considère comme mal. 19Pourtant, l’Eternel ne voulut pas détruire Juda, à cause de son serviteur David à qui il avait promis que ses descendants régneraient pour toujours8.19 Voir 2 S 7.12-16 ; 1 R 11.36..
20Sous le règne de Yoram, les Edomites se révoltèrent contre la domination de Juda, et se donnèrent un roi8.20 Voir Gn 27.40. Jusque-là, Edom avait été vassal de Juda, sous les ordres d’un gouverneur (3.9 ; 1 R 22.48).. 21Alors Yoram partit pour Tsaïr8.21 Localité inconnue, très certainement en Edom ou proche d’Edom. avec tous ses chars de guerre. En pleine nuit, il tomba sur les Edomites qui l’avaient déjà encerclé, et il les battit ainsi que les chefs des chars ; les soldats s’enfuirent chez eux. 22Depuis lors, Edom fut en révolte contre Juda, et il l’est toujours. A la même époque, Libna8.22 Ville de Juda sur les confins de la Philistie, près de Lakish (19.8), à une quarantaine de kilomètres à l’ouest de Jérusalem. C’était l’une des villes des prêtres (Jos 21.13). Sa révolte est peut-être liée à celles des Philistins et des Arabes mentionnées en 2 Ch 21.16-17. se révolta également.
23Les autres faits et gestes de Yoram et toutes ses réalisations sont cités dans le livre des Annales des rois de Juda. 24Yoram rejoignit ses ancêtres décédés et fut enterré à leurs côtés dans la Cité de David. Ahazia, son fils, lui succéda sur le trône.
Le règne d’Ahazia sur Juda
(2 Ch 22.1-6)
25La douzième année du règne de Yoram, fils d’Achab, roi d’Israël, Ahazia, fils de Yoram, devint roi de Juda. 26Il était âgé de vingt-deux ans à son avènement et il régna un an à Jérusalem8.26 En 841 av. J.-C.. Sa mère s’appelait Athalie, elle était une petite-fille d’Omri, roi d’Israël. 27Ahazia suivit l’exemple de la dynastie d’Achab et fit ce que l’Eternel considère comme mal, comme la famille d’Achab, car il était allié par mariage à cette famille. 28Il partit avec Yoram, le fils d’Achab, pour une expédition militaire contre Hazaël, roi de Syrie, à Ramoth en Galaad. Yoram fut blessé par les Syriens. 29Alors, il retourna à Jizréel8.29 Où était l’une des résidences des rois d’Israël (cf. 1 R 18.45-46 ; 21.1-2). pour se faire soigner des blessures que les Syriens lui avaient infligées à Rama pendant le combat contre Hazaël, roi de Syrie. Ahazia, fils de Yoram, roi de Juda, y alla pour lui rendre visite au cours de sa maladie.
The Shunammite’s land restored
1Now Elisha had said to the woman whose son he had restored to life, ‘Go away with your family and stay for a while wherever you can, because the Lord has decreed a famine in the land that will last seven years.’ 2The woman proceeded to do as the man of God said. She and her family went away and stayed in the land of the Philistines for seven years.
3At the end of the seven years she came back from the land of the Philistines and went to appeal to the king for her house and land. 4The king was talking to Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, and had said, ‘Tell me about all the great things Elisha has done.’ 5Just as Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha had restored the dead to life, the woman whose son Elisha had brought back to life came to appeal to the king for her house and land.
Gehazi said, ‘This is the woman, my lord the king, and this is her son whom Elisha restored to life.’ 6The king asked the woman about it, and she told him.
Then he assigned an official to her case and said to him, ‘Give back everything that belonged to her, including all the income from her land from the day she left the country until now.’
Hazael murders Ben-Hadad
7Elisha went to Damascus, and Ben-Hadad king of Aram was ill. When the king was told, ‘The man of God has come all the way up here,’ 8he said to Hazael, ‘Take a gift with you and go to meet the man of God. Consult the Lord through him; ask him, “Will I recover from this illness?” ’
9Hazael went to meet Elisha, taking with him as a gift forty camel-loads of all the finest wares of Damascus. He went in and stood before him, and said, ‘Your son Ben-Hadad king of Aram has sent me to ask, “Will I recover from this illness?” ’
10Elisha answered, ‘Go and say to him, “You will certainly recover.” Nevertheless,8:10 The Hebrew may also be read Go and say, “You will certainly not recover,” for. the Lord has revealed to me that he will in fact die.’ 11He stared at him with a fixed gaze until Hazael was embarrassed. Then the man of God began to weep.
12‘Why is my lord weeping?’ asked Hazael.
‘Because I know the harm you will do to the Israelites,’ he answered. ‘You will set fire to their fortified places, kill their young men with the sword, dash their little children to the ground, and rip open their pregnant women.’
13Hazael said, ‘How could your servant, a mere dog, accomplish such a feat?’
‘The Lord has shown me that you will become king of Aram,’ answered Elisha.
14Then Hazael left Elisha and returned to his master. When Ben-Hadad asked, ‘What did Elisha say to you?’ Hazael replied, ‘He told me that you would certainly recover.’ 15But the next day he took a thick cloth, soaked it in water and spread it over the king’s face, so that he died. Then Hazael succeeded him as king.
Jehoram king of Judah
16In the fifth year of Joram son of Ahab king of Israel, when Jehoshaphat was king of Judah, Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat began his reign as king of Judah. 17He was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem for eight years. 18He followed the ways of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for he married a daughter of Ahab. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord. 19Nevertheless, for the sake of his servant David, the Lord was not willing to destroy Judah. He had promised to maintain a lamp for David and his descendants for ever.
20In the time of Jehoram, Edom rebelled against Judah and set up its own king. 21So Jehoram8:21 Hebrew Joram, a variant of Jehoram; also in verses 23 and 24 went to Zair with all his chariots. The Edomites surrounded him and his chariot commanders, but he rose up and broke through by night; his army, however, fled back home. 22To this day Edom has been in rebellion against Judah. Libnah revolted at the same time.
23As for the other events of Jehoram’s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 24Jehoram rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David. And Ahaziah his son succeeded him as king.
Ahaziah king of Judah
25In the twelfth year of Joram son of Ahab king of Israel, Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah began to reign. 26Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem for one year. His mother’s name was Athaliah, a granddaughter of Omri king of Israel. 27He followed the ways of the house of Ahab and did evil in the eyes of the Lord, as the house of Ahab had done, for he was related by marriage to Ahab’s family.
28Ahaziah went with Joram son of Ahab to war against Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth Gilead. The Arameans wounded Joram; 29so King Joram returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds the Arameans had inflicted on him at Ramoth8:29 Hebrew Ramah, a variant of Ramoth in his battle with Hazael king of Aram.
Then Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to Jezreel to see Joram son of Ahab, because he had been wounded.
