David délivre la ville de Qeïla
1On vint prévenir David que les Philistins avaient attaqué la ville de Qeïla23.1 Ville de Juda, à 4 ou 5 kilomètres de la grotte d’Adoullam (22.1), proche de la frontière de la Philistie. et qu’ils pillaient les céréales sur les aires. 2David consulta l’Eternel pour savoir s’il devait aller attaquer les Philistins et s’il les vaincrait. L’Eternel23.2 Par Abiatar (v. 6) et par l’ourim et le toummim. lui répondit : Va, tu battras les Philistins et tu délivreras Qeïla.
3Mais les hommes de David répondirent : Déjà ici, dans le territoire de Juda, nous vivons constamment dans la crainte, qu’est-ce que ce sera si nous allons à Qeïla nous battre contre les bataillons des Philistins ?
4David consulta une nouvelle fois l’Eternel qui lui répondit : Mets-toi en route, va à Qeïla, car je te donne la victoire sur les Philistins.
5David marcha donc avec ses hommes sur Qeïla et ils attaquèrent les Philistins. Ils s’emparèrent de leurs troupeaux et leur infligèrent une lourde défaite. Ainsi David délivra les habitants de Qeïla. 6Il faut dire que quand Abiatar, fils d’Ahimélek, s’était enfui auprès de David à Qeïla, il avait emporté avec lui l’éphod servant à consulter l’Eternel.
7On fit savoir à Saül que David était allé à Qeïla ; alors il s’écria : Dieu l’a livré en mon pouvoir, car il s’est lui-même enfermé dans un piège en entrant dans une ville qui a des portes et des verrous.
8Il mobilisa tous ses hommes pour marcher sur Qeïla et assiéger David et sa troupe. 9David apprit quel mauvais dessein Saül méditait contre lui. Aussi demanda-t-il au prêtre Abiatar d’apporter l’éphod. 10Il pria : Eternel, Dieu d’Israël, ton serviteur a appris que Saül s’apprête à marcher sur Qeïla pour détruire la ville à cause de moi. 11Les autorités de Qeïla me livreront-elles à lui ? Saül viendra-t-il vraiment comme ton serviteur l’a entendu dire ? Eternel, Dieu d’Israël, je t’en prie, informe ton serviteur.
L’Eternel répondit : Il viendra.
12David ajouta : Les autorités de Qeïla me livreront-elles à Saül, moi et mes hommes ?
L’Eternel répondit : Oui, elles vous livreront.
13Alors David se mit en route avec sa troupe d’environ six cents hommes et ils quittèrent Qeïla, marchant à l’aventure. On informa Saül que David avait quitté Qeïla et il renonça à son expédition.
La visite de Jonathan
14David gagna la région désertique de Ziph23.14 Au centre du désert de Judée, au sud-est d’Hébron (Jos 15.55). et s’installa dans des refuges escarpés de la montagne. Saül le cherchait jour après jour ; mais Dieu ne le fit pas tomber entre ses mains.
15David s’aperçut que Saül s’était mis en campagne pour lui ôter la vie, et il resta dans le désert de Ziph du côté de Horsha. 16Jonathan, le fils de Saül, se mit en route et se rendit auprès de David à Horsha pour l’encourager en affermissant sa confiance en Dieu. 17Il lui dit : Sois sans crainte ! Mon père ne réussira pas à mettre la main sur toi ; tu régneras sur Israël, et moi je serai au second rang près de toi ; mon père lui-même sait bien qu’il en sera ainsi.
18Tous deux renouvelèrent leur pacte d’amitié devant l’Eternel. David resta à Horsha et Jonathan rentra chez lui.
David échappe de peu à Saül
19Quelques hommes de Ziph allèrent trouver Saül à Guibéa pour lui dire23.19 Voir Ps 54.2. : Sais-tu que David se tient caché dans notre région dans des refuges escarpés à Horsha, dans les collines de Hakila au sud des steppes23.19 Ou : du Yéshimôn, nom désignant une steppe inculte. Il pourrait avoir valeur de nom propre ici (voir v. 24 ; 26.1, 3). ? 20Maintenant, ô roi, quand tu le désireras, viens, et nous nous chargerons de te le livrer.
21Saül répondit : Vous êtes bénis par l’Eternel, vous qui avez eu pitié de moi ! 22Allez donc, confirmez vos renseignements, observez et tenez-vous au courant de ses déplacements, sachez qui l’a vu dans ces endroits-là, car on m’a dit qu’il est très rusé. 23Repérez toutes ses cachettes, et revenez me voir avec des informations sûres ; alors j’irai avec vous, et s’il est dans le pays, je fouillerai au besoin chaque recoin du territoire de Juda pour le chercher.
24Les gens de Ziph quittèrent Saül et repartirent chez eux, précédant le roi. David et ses hommes se trouvaient au désert de Maôn23.24 Au sud du désert de Ziph, près de la localité de Karmel (15.12)., dans la plaine qui se trouve au sud des steppes.
25Saül partit à sa recherche avec ses hommes. On en informa David, et il descendit dans un endroit rocheux du désert de Maôn où il s’installa. Saül l’apprit et se mit à le poursuivre dans cette région. 26Saül marchait sur l’un des flancs de la montagne, tandis que David et ses hommes s’enfuyaient sur le flanc opposé. David précipitait sa marche pour échapper à Saül. Mais déjà le roi et ses hommes les cernaient et allaient les capturer. 27Alors un messager vint dire à Saül : Reviens tout de suite, car les Philistins ont fait une incursion dans le pays.
28Aussitôt Saül cessa de poursuivre David pour aller affronter les Philistins. C’est pourquoi on a appelé cet endroit le Rocher des Séparations.
David Saves the People of Keilah
1David was told, “The Philistines are fighting against the town of Keilah. They are stealing grain from the threshing floors.” 2So he asked the Lord for advice. He said, “Should I go and attack those Philistines?”
The Lord answered him, “Go and attack them. Save Keilah.”
3But David’s men said to him, “We’re afraid here in Judah. Suppose we go to Keilah and fight against the Philistine army. Then we’ll be even more afraid.”
4Once again David asked the Lord what he should do. The Lord answered him, “Go down to Keilah. I am going to hand the Philistines over to you.” 5So David and his men went to Keilah. They fought against the Philistines and carried off their livestock. David wounded and killed large numbers of Philistines. And he saved the people of Keilah. 6Abiathar, the son of Ahimelek, had brought down the sacred linen apron with him from Nob. He did it when he ran away to David at Keilah.
Saul Chases David
7Saul was told that David had gone to Keilah. He said, “God has handed him over to me. David has trapped himself by entering a town that has gates with metal bars.” 8So Saul brought together all his soldiers to go to battle. He ordered them to go down to Keilah. He told them to surround David and his men. He told them to get ready to attack them.
9David learned that Saul was planning to attack him. So he said to Abiathar the priest, “Bring the linen apron.” 10Then David said, “Lord, you are the God of Israel. I know for sure that Saul plans to come to Keilah. He plans to destroy the town because of me. 11Will the citizens of Keilah hand me over to him? Will Saul come down here, as I’ve heard he would? Lord, you are the God of Israel. Please answer me.”
The Lord said, “He will come down.”
12Again David asked, “Will the citizens of Keilah hand me and my men over to Saul?”
And the Lord said, “They will.”
13So David and his men left Keilah. The total number of them was about 600. They kept moving from place to place. Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah. So he didn’t go there.
14Sometimes David stayed in places of safety in the desert. At other times he stayed in the hills of the Desert of Ziph. Day after day Saul looked for him. But God didn’t hand David over to him.
15David was at Horesh in the Desert of Ziph. There he learned that Saul had come out to kill him. 16Saul’s son Jonathan went to David at Horesh. He told David that God would make him strong. 17“Don’t be afraid,” he said. “My father Saul won’t harm you. You will be king over Israel. And I will be next in command. Even my father Saul knows this.” 18The two of them made a covenant of friendship in front of the Lord. Then Jonathan went home. But David remained at Horesh.
19The people of Ziph went up to Saul at Gibeah. They said, “David is hiding among us. He’s hiding in places of safety at Horesh. Horesh is south of Jeshimon on the hill of Hakilah. 20Your Majesty, come down when it pleases you to come. It will be our duty to hand David over to you.”
21Saul replied, “May the Lord bless you because you were concerned about me. 22Make sure you are right. Go and check things out again. Find out where David usually goes. Find out who has seen him there. People tell me he’s very tricky. 23Find out about all the hiding places he uses. Come back to me with all the facts. I’ll go with you. Suppose he’s in the area. Then I’ll track him down among all the family groups of Judah.”
24So they started out. They went to Ziph ahead of Saul. David and his men were in the Desert of Maon. Maon is south of Jeshimon in the Arabah Valley. 25Saul and his men started out to look for David. David was told about it. So he went down to a rock in the Desert of Maon to hide. Saul heard he was there. So he went into the Desert of Maon to chase David.
26Saul was going along one side of the mountain. David and his men were on the other side. They were hurrying to get away from Saul. Saul and his army were closing in on David and his men. They were about to capture them. 27Just then a messenger came to Saul. He said, “Come quickly! The Philistines are attacking the land.” 28So Saul stopped chasing David. He went to fight against the Philistines. That’s why they call that place Sela Hammahlekoth. 29David left that place. He went and lived in places of safety near En Gedi.
