David veut faire transporter le coffre de l’alliance à Jérusalem
(2 S 6.1-11)
1David tint conseil avec les chefs commandant les « milliers » et les « centaines », ainsi qu’avec les autres notables. 2Puis il s’adressa à toute l’assemblée d’Israël et leur dit : Si vous le jugez bon, et si cela est dans le plan de l’Eternel notre Dieu, envoyons des messages à tous nos compatriotes qui restent encore dans toutes les régions d’Israël, ainsi qu’aux prêtres et aux lévites dans leurs villes de résidence, pour qu’ils nous rejoignent. 3Puis nous ramènerons auprès de nous le coffre de notre Dieu, car nous ne nous sommes pas préoccupés d’aller le chercher sous le règne de Saül.
4Toute l’assemblée trouva cette proposition judicieuse, et l’on déclara qu’il fallait la suivre. 5David rassembla donc tout Israël, depuis le torrent d’Egypte13.5 Le torrent du Shihor, terme égyptien qui signifie « la mare de Horus », divinité égyptienne, sans doute l’un des canaux du Nil (voir Jos 13.3 ; Es 23.3 ; Jr 2.18). jusqu’à Lebo-Hamath13.5 Non identifiée, mais au nord du pays. Autre traduction : jusqu’aux abords de Hamath., pour faire venir le coffre de Dieu de Qiryath-Yearim13.5 A quelque 13 kilomètres au nord-ouest de Jérusalem. Voir 1 S 6.21..
6David, avec tout Israël, se rendit à Baala13.6 Nom cananéen de Qiryath-Yearim (voir note 2 S 6.2)., à Qiryath-Yearim, dans le territoire de Juda, pour en ramener le coffre de Dieu, l’Eternel qui siège entre les chérubins13.6 Voir Ex 25.22. et sur lequel le Nom par excellence a été invoqué. 7On chargea le coffre de Dieu sur un chariot neuf après l’avoir pris de la maison d’Abinadab. Ouzza et Ahyo conduisaient le chariot13.7 Fils ou descendant d’Abinadab.. 8David et tout Israël exprimaient leur joie devant Dieu en chantant de toutes leurs forces et en jouant sur des lyres, des luths, des tambourins, des cymbales et des trompettes. 9Lorsqu’ils furent arrivés près de l’aire de Kidôn, les bœufs firent un écart et Ouzza tendit la main pour saisir le coffre de Dieu. 10Alors l’Eternel se mit en colère contre Ouzza et l’Eternel le frappa parce qu’il avait touché le coffre de sa main. Ouzza mourut là devant Dieu13.10 Le coffre aurait dû être transporté sur les épaules des lévites (Ex 25.12-15) et jamais touché, sous peine de mort (Nb 4.15). Ces prescriptions furent observées par la suite (15.1-15)..
11David s’irrita parce que l’Eternel avait ouvert une brèche en frappant Ouzza, et il appela ce lieu Pérets-Ouzza (Brèche d’Ouzza), nom qu’il porte encore aujourd’hui. 12Ce jour-là, David prit peur de Dieu et il se demanda : Comment oserais-je faire venir le coffre de Dieu chez moi ?
13Il ne transporta donc pas le coffre chez lui, dans la Cité de David, mais il le fit déposer dans la maison d’Obed-Edom, un homme originaire de Gath. 14Le coffre y resta trois mois, et l’Eternel bénit la famille d’Obed-Edom et tous ses biens.
Bringing back the ark
1David conferred with each of his officers, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds. 2He then said to the whole assembly of Israel, ‘If it seems good to you and if it is the will of the Lord our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our people throughout the territories of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites who are with them in their towns and pasture-lands, to come and join us. 3Let us bring the ark of our God back to us, for we did not enquire of13:3 Or we neglected it13:3 Or him during the reign of Saul.’ 4The whole assembly agreed to do this, because it seemed right to all the people.
5So David assembled all Israel, from the River Shihor in Egypt to Lebo Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath Jearim. 6David and all Israel went to Baalah of Judah (Kiriath Jearim) to bring up from there the ark of God the Lord, who is enthroned between the cherubim – the ark that is called by the Name.
7They moved the ark of God from Abinadab’s house on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding it. 8David and all the Israelites were celebrating with all their might before God, with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, cymbals and trumpets.
9When they came to the threshing-floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled. 10The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.
11Then David was angry because the Lord’s wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah.13:11 Perez Uzzah means outbreak against Uzzah.
12David was afraid of God that day and asked, ‘How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?’ 13He did not take the ark to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. 14The ark of God remained with the family of Obed-Edom in his house for three months, and the Lord blessed his household and everything he had.
