1“May mga minahan nga diin makita ang mga plata, ug may mga dapit diin himuong lunsay ang bulawan. 2Ang puthaw makuha gikan sa yuta, ug ang bronsi tunawon gikan sa mga bato. 3Nagagamit ang mga tawo ug suga para hayag ang ilang pagkutkot sa mga bato sa kinahiladman sa yuta. 4Nagakutkot silag agianan sa minahan, sa lugar nga walay namuyo o dili agian sa mga tawo. Manaog sila didto ginamit ang pisi nga maglabyog-labyog. 5Sa ibabaw sa yuta nagatubo ang mga tanom nga gigikanan sa pagkaon, apan sa ilalom sa yuta daw sa gitunaw sa kalayo. 6Ang mga bato sa yuta may mga sapiro28:6 sapiro: Usa ka matang sa mahalong bato. ug ang mga abog niini may bulawan. 7Ang mga agianan ngadto sa minahan wala makit-i sa mga langgam nga nagapangdagit o mga banog, 8ug wala maagii sa mabangis nga mga mananap o sa liyon. 9Kaloton sa mga tawo ang pinakagahi nga mga bato, bisan pa ang ilawom nga bahin sa mga bukid. 10Maghimo silag agianan diha sa dagkong mga bato, ug makaplagan nila ang nagkalain-lain nga mga mahalong bato. 11Kutkoton nila ang tinubdan sa mga suba, ug habwaon nila ang natago nga mga bahandi ug dad-on sa hayag.
12“Apan asa man makaplagi ang kaalam ug panabot? 13Wala mahibalo ang tawo kon asa kini makaplagi.28:13 kon asa kini makaplagi: o, kon unsa kini kabililhon. Dili kini makaplagan dinhi sa kalibotan. 14Dili usab kini makaplagan bisan sa kinahiladman sa dagat. 15Dili kini mapalit ug bulawan o pilak. 16Dili matupngan ang bili niini sa purong bulawan o sa mahalong mga bato nga onix ug sapiro. 17Labaw pa kini sa bulawan o kristal. Dili kini ikabaylo ug alahas nga bulawan. 18Labaw pa kinig bili sa coral, sa haspe, o sa rubi. 19Dili kini matupngan sa topasio nga gikan sa Etiopia28:19 Etiopia: sa Hebreo, Cush. ug dili kini mapalit ug purong bulawan.
20“Nan, asa man makaplagi ang kaalam o ang panabot? 21Walay buhing binuhat nga makakita niini bisan pa ang mga langgam. 22Bisan ang dapit sa kalaglagan, nga mao ang dapit sa mga patay, pulos hungihong lang ang nadungog bahin niini. 23Ang Dios lang gayod ang nakahibalo kon asa makita ang kaalam, 24kay makita niya bisan pa ang kinalayoan nga bahin sa kalibotan, ug makita niya ang tanang anaa sa ubos sa langit. 25Sa dihang gihatagan niya ug gahom ang hangin, ug gisukod niya kon unsa kakusog sa ulan, 26ug sa dihang nagdesisyon siya kon asa moulan ug kon asa mag-agi ang kilat ug dalogdog, 27gipakita niya ang kaalam ug ang kabililhon niini. Gitistingan niya kini ug giaprobahan. 28Unya miingon siya sa mga tawo, ‘May kaalam kamo ug panabot kon magtahod kamo sa Ginoo ug maglikay sa daotan.’ ”
The Place Where Wisdom Is Found Is Explained
1There are mines where silver is found.
There are places where gold is purified.
2Iron is taken out of the earth.
Copper is melted down from ore.
3Human beings light up the darkness.
They search for ore in the deepest pits.
They look for it in the blackest darkness.
4Far from where people live they cut a tunnel.
They do it in places where other people don’t go.
Far away from people they swing back and forth on ropes.
5Food grows on the surface of the earth.
But far below, the earth is changed as if by fire.
6Lapis lazuli is taken from the rocky earth.
Its dust contains nuggets of gold.
7No bird knows that hidden path.
No falcon’s eye has seen it.
8Proud animals don’t walk on it.
Lions don’t prowl there.
9Human hands attack the hardest rock.
Their strong hands uncover the base of the mountains.
10They tunnel through the rock.
Their eyes see all its treasures.
11They search the places where the rivers begin.
They bring hidden things out into the light.
12But where can wisdom be found?
Where does understanding live?
13No human being understands how much it’s worth.
It can’t be found anywhere in the world.
14The ocean says, “It’s not in me.”
The sea says, “It’s not here either.”
15It can’t be bought with the finest gold.
Its price can’t be weighed out in silver.
16It can’t be bought with gold from Ophir.
It can’t be bought with priceless onyx or lapis lazuli.
17Gold or crystal can’t compare with it.
It can’t be bought with jewels made of gold.
18Don’t bother to talk about coral and jasper.
Wisdom is worth far more than rubies.
19A topaz from Cush can’t compare with it.
It can’t be bought with the purest gold.
20So where does wisdom come from?
Where does understanding live?
21It’s hidden from the eyes of every living thing.
Even the birds in the sky can’t find it.
22Death and the Grave say,
“Only reports about it have reached our ears.”
23But God understands the way to it.
He is the only one who knows where it lives.
24He sees from one end of the earth to the other.
He views everything in the world.
25He made the mighty wind.
He measured out the waters.
26He gave orders for the rain to fall.
He made paths for the thunderstorms.
27Then he looked at wisdom and set its price.
He established it and tested it.
28He said to human beings,
“Have respect for the Lord. That will prove you are wise.
Avoid evil. That will show you have understanding.”
