Si David Gihimong Hari sa Juda
1Human niadto, nangutana si David sa Ginoo, “Motungas ba ako sa usa sa mga lungsod sa Juda?” Mitubag ang Ginoo, “Oo.” Nangutana si David, “Asa dapit?” Mitubag ang Ginoo, “Sa Hebron.” 2Busa mitungas didto si David uban sa iyang duha ka asawa nga si Ahinoam nga taga-Jezreel ug si Abigail nga asawa kanhi ni Nabal nga taga-Carmel. 3Giuban usab ni David ang iyang mga tawo apil ang ilang mga pamilya, ug namuyo sila sa Hebron ug sa mga lungsod sa libot niini. 4Unya, miadto sa Hebron ang mga pangulo sa Juda ug gidihogan nila si David sa pagpaila nga siya na ang hari sa Juda.
Sa dihang gisultihan nila si David nga ang mga taga-Jabes Gilead ang naglubong kang Saul, 5nagpadala si David ug mga mensahero ngadto sa taga-Jabes Gilead sa pagsulti niini kanila, “Hinaut nga panalanginan kamo sa Ginoo tungod sa kaayo nga inyong gipakita ngadto kang Saul nga inyong agalon pinaagi sa paglubong kaniya. 6Hinaut nga ipakita sa Ginoo ang iyang kaayo ug pagkamatinumanon diha kaninyo, ug ipakita ko usab ang akong kaayo kaninyo tungod sa inyong gihimo. 7Pagmalig-on ug pagmaisogon kamo bisan patay na si Saul nga inyong agalon. Ako ang gipili sa mga taga-Juda ingon nga ilang hari.”
Nagaaway ang mga Pamilya ni David ug ni Saul
8Unya, si Abner nga komander sa mga sundalo ni Saul, nga anak ni Ner, miadto sa Mahanaim uban si Ishboshet nga anak ni Saul. 9Didto giproklamar ni Abner si Ishboshet nga hari sa tibuok Israel, apil na dinhi ang mga dapit sa Gilead, Ashuri, Jezreel, Efraim, Benjamin. 10Nagaedad si Ishboshet ug 40 ka tuig sa dihang nahimo siyang hari sa Israel, ug naghari siya sulod sa duha ka tuig. Apan si David ang giila nga hari sa mga taga-Juda. 11Ug naghari si David sa Juda sulod sa pito ka tuig ug unom ka bulan. Didto siya magpuyo sa Hebron.
12Usa niana ka higayon, migikan si Abner sa Mahanaim aron pag-adto sa Gibeon uban sa mga tawo ni Ishboshet. 13Gitagbo sila ni Joab nga anak ni Zeruya ug sa mga tawo ni David didto sa bangag nga pundohanan ug tubig sa Gibeon. Nanglingkod ang grupo ni Abner sa usa ka bahin sa pundohanan ug tubig ug ang grupo ni Joab didto usab sa atbang. 14Unya miingon si Abner kang Joab, “Pasangkaon nato sa atong atubangan ang pipila nato ka maayong mga sundalo.” Misugot si Joab, 15ug nanindog sa pagpakig-away ang 12 ka tawo ni Ishboshet nga gikan sa tribo ni Benjamin ug ang 12 usab ka tawo ni David. 16Ug naggunitay ang matag usa sa ulo sa ilang kaaway ug nagdinunggabay sa isigka-kilid, ug nangamatay silang tanan. 18-19Didto niadtong higayona ang tulo ka anak ni Zeruya nga si Joab, Abishai, ug Asahel. 22Miingon pag-usab si Abner kang Asahel, “Ayaw na akog gukda! Ayaw ako pugsa sa pagpatay kanimo. Unsa pa may nawong nga akong ikaatubang sa imong igsoon nga si Joab kon mapatay ko ikaw?” 23Apan wala gayod miundang si Asahel sa paggukod kaniya, busa giduslak siya ni Abner sa pulohan sa iyang bangkaw ug milapos kini sa iyang likod. Natumba siya ug namatay. Ug ang mga tawo nga makaagi niadtong dapita manghunong.
24Sa dihang nahibaloan ni Joab ug ni Abishai ang nahitabo, gigukod nila si Abner. Nagasalop na ang adlaw sa dihang nakaabot sila sa bungtod sa Ama duol sa Gia, sa dalan paingon sa kamingawan sa Gibeon. 25Mipaluyo kang Abner ang mga sundalo nga gikan sa tribo ni Benjamin ug nagtigom sila didto sa ibabaw sa bungtod aron sa pagpangandam sa pagpakiggira. 26Misinggit si Abner kang Joab, “Magpinatyanay na lang ba kita hangtod sa hangtod? Wala ka ba maghunahuna nga ang sangpotan niini mao ang pagdinumtanay? Kanus-a mo man paundangon ang imong mga tawo sa paggukod sa ilang mga kadugo?”
27Unya mitubag si Joab, “Ipanumpa ko atubangan sa buhi nga Dios, nga kon wala ka mosulti niini, magpadayon sa paggukod kaninyo ang akong mga tawo hangtod mabuntag.” 28Busa gipatingog ni Joab ang budyong ug miundang ang tanan niyang mga tawo sa paggukod sa mga taga-Israel, ug naundang ang gira. 29Tibuok gabii nga nagbaklay si Abner ug ang iyang mga tawo agi sa Kapatagan sa Jordan.2:29 Kapatagan sa Jordan: sa Hebreo, Araba. Unya mitabok sila sa Suba sa Jordan ug nagpadayon sa paglakaw sa tibuok buntag hangtod nakaabot sila sa Mahanaim.
30Miundang si Joab sa paggukod kang Abner, ug mipauli siya uban sa iyang mga tawo. Sa dihang gitigom niya sila, nasayran niya nga gawas kang Asahel, may 19 pa nga namatay kanila. 31Apan 360 ang ilang napatay sa mga tawo ni Abner, ug tanan gikan sa tribo ni Benjamin. 32Gikuha nila ni Joab ang patayng lawas ni Asahel ug gilubong sa lubnganan sa amahan niini didto sa Betlehem. Unya tibuok gabii silang nagbaklay, ug nakaabot sila sa Hebron sa pagkabuntag.
David Is Anointed to Be King Over Judah
1After Saul and Jonathan died, David asked the Lord for advice. “Should I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” he asked.
The Lord said, “Go up.”
David asked, “Where should I go?”
“To Hebron,” the Lord answered.
2So David went up there with his two wives. Their names were Ahinoam from Jezreel and Abigail from Carmel. Abigail was Nabal’s widow. 3David also took his men and their families with him. They made their homes in Hebron and its towns. 4Then the men of Judah came to Hebron. There they anointed David to be king over the people of Judah.
David was told that the men from Jabesh Gilead had buried Saul’s body. 5So he sent messengers to them to speak for him. The messengers said, “You were kind to bury the body of your master Saul. May the Lord bless you for that. 6And may he now be kind and faithful to you. David will treat you well for being kind to Saul’s body. 7Now then, be strong and brave. Your master Saul is dead. And the people of Judah have anointed David to be king over them.”
The Armies of David and Saul Fight Each Other
8Abner, the son of Ner, was commander of Saul’s army. Abner had brought Saul’s son Ish-Bosheth to Mahanaim. 9There Abner made Ish-Bosheth king over Gilead, Ashuri and Jezreel. He also made him king over Ephraim, Benjamin and other areas of Israel.
10Ish-Bosheth was 40 years old when he became king over Israel. He ruled for two years. But the people of Judah remained faithful to David. 11David was king in Hebron over the people of Judah for seven and a half years.
12Abner, the son of Ner, left Mahanaim and went to Gibeon. The men of Ish-Bosheth, the son of Saul, went with him. 13Joab, the son of Zeruiah, and David’s men also went out. All of them met at the pool in Gibeon. One group sat down on one side of the pool. The other group sat on the other side.
14Then Abner said to Joab, “Let’s have some of the young men get up and fight. Let’s tell them to fight hand to hand in front of us.”
“All right. Let them do it,” Joab said.
15So the young men stood up and were counted off. There were 12 on the side of Benjamin and Saul’s son Ish-Bosheth. And there were 12 on David’s side. 16Each man grabbed one of his enemies by the head. Each one stuck his dagger into the other man’s side. And all of them fell down together and died. So that place in Gibeon was named Helkath Hazzurim.
17The fighting that day was very heavy. Abner and the Israelites lost the battle to David’s men.
18The three sons of Zeruiah were there. Their names were Joab, Abishai and Asahel. Asahel was as quick on his feet as a wild antelope. 19He chased Abner. He didn’t turn to the right or the left as he chased him. 20Abner looked behind him. He asked, “Asahel, is that you?”
“It is,” he answered.
21Then Abner said to him, “Turn to the right or the left. Fight one of the young men. Take his weapons away from him.” But Asahel wouldn’t stop chasing him.
22Again Abner warned Asahel, “Stop chasing me! If you don’t, I’ll strike you down. Then how could I look your brother Joab in the face?”
23But Asahel refused to give up the chase. So Abner drove the dull end of his spear into Asahel’s stomach. The spear came out through his back. He fell and died right there on the spot. Every man stopped when he came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died.
24But Joab and Abishai chased Abner. As the sun was going down, they came to the hill of Ammah. It was near Giah on the way to the dry and empty land close to Gibeon. 25The men of Benjamin gathered in a group around Abner. They took their stand on top of a hill.
26Abner called out to Joab, “Do you want our swords to keep on killing us off? Don’t you know that all this fighting will end in bitter feelings? How long will it be before you order your men to stop chasing their fellow Israelites?”
27Joab answered, “It’s a good thing you spoke up. If you hadn’t, the men would have kept on chasing them until morning. And that’s just as sure as God is alive.”
28So Joab blew a trumpet. All the troops stopped. They didn’t chase Israel anymore. They didn’t fight anymore either.
29All that night Abner and his men marched through the Arabah Valley. They went across the Jordan River. All morning long they kept on going. Finally, they came to Mahanaim.
30Then Joab stopped chasing Abner. He gathered together the whole army. Besides Asahel, only 19 of David’s men were missing. 31But David’s men had killed 360 men from Benjamin who were with Abner. 32They got Asahel’s body and buried it in his father’s tomb at Bethlehem. Then Joab and his men marched all night. They arrived at Hebron at sunrise.
