a teacher of Jewish law.


ransom
the price paid to free someone who has been condemned. Jesus gave himself as a ransom. He set his people free from slavery to sin and its death penalty.

reap
to gather a crop at harvest time.

Reap can also refer to what will happen to someone as a result of their own actions.


reconcile
to bring peace between two people who have been enemies.

The world sinned and was hostile toward God. Then God sent Jesus to reconcile the world to God.

redeem
when a family member pays a price to buy someone or something back from slavery or ownership by someone else.

In the New Testament, our brother Jesus redeems us from sin, or sets us free, by his death on the cross.

remnant
a few people who are left over from a bigger group.

The Bible says many people will fall away from serving God. But God promises always to keep a faithful remnant who are true to him.


repent
to turn away from sin and live as a citizen of Christ's kingdom.

resurrection
coming back to life after being dead. Death came into the world because of sin.

Jesus raised people from the dead as a sign of God's power over sin.

The resurrection of Jesus is the key victory over death and the beginning of the new creation.

Because Jesus rose from the dead, his followers have a new life now. They will also rise again with new bodies when Jesus comes again.

At the final resurrection, all people will rise from the dead to be judged by God.


revelation
to show someone something or teach them something they did not know.

In the Bible, God reveals the truth about us and our world. By his great acts of salvation, God shows his people his power and love. God sometimes revealed things to certain people (prophets or apostles).

When Jesus came he revealed who God is and how much he loved us.

righteousness
being faithful to the promises of a covenant. God alone is righteous.

God expects his people to be righteous. But they do not always live according to God's covenant, even the "new" one God instituted.

The Holy Spirit now works in the followers of Jesus so they can live righteously.
